What Do You Get With Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Game Pass is the base version of the subscription tier, and the only one that was available before the introduction of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It costs $9.99 / £7.99 a month, making it the cheaper of the two tiers.
The base Xbox Game Pass doesn’t feature many of the bells and whistles found in its more expensive Ultimate counterpart, but you do get access to the entirety of the Xbox Game Pass library on console. That includes any and all first-party Microsoft Game Studios titles like Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves and Halo Infinite alongside the likes of Skyrim, Doom Eternal and Psychonauts 2.
You’re also getting loads of quality third-party AAA titles, as well as some of the best indie games around. From Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Mass Effect Legendary Edition to Hollow Knight and Outer Wilds, there are games to suit the tastes of pretty much everyone.
The base Xbox Game Pass tier is ideal if you’ve just bought a new Xbox Series X/S or older Xbox One console. If you just want to get stuck in and try out a huge range of games without the need for extras like PC Game Pass, online play or cloud gaming, then Xbox Game Pass is a solid option.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Is It Worth It
The short answer is: yes, most definitely Game Pass Ultimate is worth it, particularly if you’re only paying £1 for your first three months.
There’s a basketful of value from the service and it’s quick and simple to sign up.
Looking just at the free games you get to play, there are well over 100 titles you can download and play whenever you want, ranging from small independent games to triple-A top-end titles. Even if you download just three of those games, you’re easily earning your money back per month.
And the selection of games you can download are top-notch. Sail the open seas in the incredibly fun Sea of Thieves, or explore space with Master Chief in any of the Halo games.
And if you can’t find any games you like in that list you can explore EA Play for a number of great sporting games. And after that, you can check out the Xbox games store and enjoy anywhere from 15%-75% on the latest games.
We also really enjoy the heavy discount on the multiplayer part of Live Gold as playing online with friends is arguably the best part of gaming.

How Many Games Are Available
So Xbox Game Pass is pretty simple: For $10 per month, you get access to a catalog of games and you can download and play them all you want on your Xbox One.
What makes or breaks a service like this is the selection of games. As of July 12, 2017, there are 119 games available in the catalog. They arent all Xbox One games. In fact, the majority of them are Xbox 360 games that you can play on your Xbox One through the backwards compatibility feature.
You will see some big-name games here. Youll find five games from the Gears of War series, Halo 5: Guardians, all three BioShock games, NBA 2K16, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected, and more. But the list is rounded out with older Xbox 360 games and smaller indie games. That doesnt mean theyre bad, but you certainly arent getting all the latest full-price Xbox One games. You can view the full list of Xbox Game Pass games on Microsofts website. Microsoft adds new games every month.

Which Xbox Game Pass Tier Should I Get
Remember those three questions you asked yourself earlier? If so, you should now have a pretty good idea of which Xbox Game Pass tier to get:
- Get Xbox Game Pass for Console if you want to download games to an Xbox console and don’t care about playing certain games online
- Get PC Game Pass if you want to download games to a gaming PC
- Get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if you want to download games to both an Xbox console and a gaming PC and/or if you want to stream games to Android, iOS, Web browsers and Xbox consoles. Also consider Ultimate if you plan on playing your games online
Its also worth noting that theres one circumstance under which you shouldnt subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, and thats if you prefer to own games outright. Xbox Game Pass offers a ton of games, but they do come and go regularly, and sooner or later, a game that you love will leave the service while youre in the middle of it. Its a frustrating experience, and one that youll never encounter if you simply buy games one at a time.
Buying games outright can also be cheaper. At $15 per month, a years worth of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will run you a steep $180. Thats about three big-budget games, or somewhere between nine and 20 indies, to say nothing of mid-budget games that you can often find on sale. Its worth surveying your gaming habits and doing a little math before you invest in any tier of Game Pass.

Final Verdict: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Is The Best But Only If You Need Its Services
If money is no object then Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the best deal. Even if you only game on one system, you get Xbox Live Gold membership which is very useful for Xbox One owners, plus you can choose to use Cloud Gaming streaming services any time you want. We’d recommend Xbox Game Pass Ultimate most of all for Xbox owners thanks to the benefits that Xbox Live Gold offer and the fact it’s essential if you want to play online.
However, if you’re on a budget then Xbox Game Pass will still serve you well too, as you get access to plenty of games. In particular, if you only have a gaming PC then Xbox Game Pass is a good option as you don’t have to worry about needing Xbox Live Gold to play online.
Pricing: You Get What You Pay For With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Offering More
$14.99 per month and includes all formats.
Also frequently available for less via third-party retailers.
Xbox Game Pass is the cheapest option at a standard $9.99 per month via the Microsoft Store. If you only have one system to play games on, that’s a good deal that’s in line with Netflix prices.
However, for an extra $5 a month, you get access to the games libraries for both PC and console. You also get Xbox Live Gold membership which is the only way in which you can play games online via your Xbox One or Xbox 360 console. There’s also the addition of regular free games to keep permanently via Games with Gold which offers three to four games each month.
In terms of value for money, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offers the most features but only if you will actually use them.

What Do You Get With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will likely be your first port of call if you’re checking out the service for the first time. Microsoft really wants players to subscribe to the higher tier, it seems, as brand new players get access to a 14-day free trial for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Beyond that, players can claim their first paid month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for just $1 / £1. Every month after that will cost $14.99 / £10.99, so a bit of a jump from the cost of the base Xbox Game Pass subscription.
With that in mind, you’d expect Ultimate to come with its fair share of advantages over its cheaper counterpart, and you can rest assured that it absolutely does. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundles in Xbox Live Gold, giving players access to online play and monthly Games with Gold titles.
But there’s more on top of that, too. Ultimate grants access to PC Game Pass, a fantastic service if you own even a half-decent gaming PC. PC Game Pass also includes some PC exclusive games like Age of Empires 4 as well as the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 3.
For those of you who like to game on the go, Xbox Cloud Gaming is also included with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate package. This allows subscribers to play certain titles on a device other than console or PC, such as a tablet or your smartphone.
Lastly, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Perks offer monthly rewards such as free add-ons for various games like Halo Infinite, and free trials for apps like Crunchyroll, Spotify, and YouTube Premium.
Remember Youll Have To Download Them First
Theres one major way this experience doesnt compare to Netflix or even Sonys PlayStation Now. While both Netflix and PlayStation Now allow you to start streaming a video or game immediately, Xbox Game Pass requires you download a game to your Xbox One before you play it.
For example, BioShock Infinite, which is 13 GB in size, took nearly an hour to download on our fairly speedy Internet connection.
If you plan on sticking with a game, thats good news. Youll have better performance with the game installed on your Xbox One. But you cant just sit down and flip through a few games, trying each for a few minutes and seeing what you like. Youll need to download each game in full before you play it.
Thats fine, reallyits the standard experience with Xbox One games, after all. Just dont expect anything else. How long you have to wait before playing a game will depend on the speed of your Internet connection.
Once a game is installed, you can play it all you like. If your Xbox Game Pass subscription expires, the game will remain installed, but you wont be able to play it until you either resubscribe or purchase the game. You dont get to keep games you download via Xbox Game Passyou lose access to them when your subscription stops.

Fallout 4 is a must-play RPG from Bethesda.
At $14.99 per month, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is Microsofts big all-in-one offering, and its a good value for folks who play a lot of online multiplayer games. Ultimate gives you access to all three libraries: console, PC, and cloud gaming on the Game Pass mobile app. On top of that, you get Ultimate-exclusive in-game perks , all the benefits of Xboxs online multiplayer service, Xbox Live Gold, and full access to the EA Play catalog.
In addition to all the games on Game Pass and EA Play, Ultimate also includes member discounts, various exclusive perks , and everything associated with Xbox Live Gold, including playing games online and chatting with friends across the entire Xbox network. Without Ultimate or Gold, you can only participate in free-to-play multiplayer games. This is a recent change to Xbox Microsoft used to require Gold even for online free-to-play games.
Does Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Have Cloud Gaming For Pc Or Console
For consoles, no. But Microsoft did just launch cloud gaming access for PC users in a limited closed beta in late April. The access officially opened up on April 20, but to play Game Pass games on your PC via the cloud, you need an invite and have to already have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
Invites were sent out in a first wave on April 20 and will continue to roll out to new users throughout the year. When you get an invite, you can begin playing games on your PC through the cloud. Which means no downloads.
This capability has also expanded to iOS devices and it will soon expand to Mac, as well as browsers on Windows sometime in the very near future.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate debuts as Microsoft’s new all-inclusive subscription for gaming, bundling leading Xbox subscriptions at a discounted rate. Comprised of three high-value memberships spanning Xbox One consoles and Windows 10 PCs, it presents sizeable savings over purchasing each separately.
Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One proposes a Netflix-style service, packing over 100 standalone titles for a flat monthly fee. Its ever-rotating library has garnered deserved attention, with a diverse lineup of blockbusters and indies and new additions every month. Microsoft-published titles all permanently reside on the service too, covering Halo, Gears of War, and Forza titles at launch. While ideal to kickstart a library for new Xbox users, day-one inclusion of Microsoft flagships also presents value for veterans.
Unveiled at E3 2019 in June, Xbox Game Pass has also expanded to PC under a separate monthly subscription. Built on shared values to the Xbox One service, it packs over 100 games for Windows 10 PCs via the integrated Microsoft Store. Top Xbox franchises hit the PC service on launch day, alongside a worthy compilation of third-party properties. Extending to a new crowd of gamers, it’s ideal for those who game on Microsoft’s latest PC operating system.

Compatibility: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Works For More Systems
Works across both PC and console library.
Also offers Cloud Gaming streaming meaning support for Android.
When it comes to compatibility, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the most varied. It means you can play games on your PC, Xbox One, and your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S console. It also means you can stream games to your Android smartphone or tablet.
In contrast, Xbox Game Pass requires you to pick one system and stick with it. That’s fine if you only play PC games or you only play console games, but it can be restrictive if you plan on expanding your horizons. That’s particularly true now that it’s possible to stream games to your phone which could be useful once in a while.
