How to Manage & Move your Windows Store & Xbox Game Pass Game Installations! (change Default Drive)

The default install directory for the games is the WindowsApps folder. Alongside many other Windows 10 applications, the games you download from Game Pass are also stored in this file. You must have administrator permissions if you want to gain access to it though.

In fact, even you manage to open the folder you will not be able to run or locate the game files in it. They are encrypted by Windows during installation and they can only be run from the Game Pass app. So running the game from .exe is not possible when it comes to the desktop application.

Microsoft’s New Xbox App For Windows Finally Solves Game Install Headachesyour Browser Indicates If You’ve Visited This Link

Microsoft is now allowing testers to access a new Xbox app for Windows that greatly improves the game install process from the Windows store. As we reported earlier this month, the updated app allows PC gamers to install titles into any folder of their choice with unrestricted access to gamefiles.

Why Move Xbox Game Pass Pc Saves To Steam

Xbox Game Pass might be an excellent way to dive into Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice, Sea of Thieves, or even the new Grounded Preview at very little cost, but there are a few caveats that come with using the service. For one, the Xbox app itself is fairly restrictive when it comes to its game files, mainly due to DRM. This makes tweaking any launch settings for games difficult, which may be necessary to fix bugs or performance issues.

Technical issues aside, its also nice to have the freedom to move to another platform, free from losing game progress as a consequence. This means you can use Xbox Game Pass to try before you buy, without being exclusively tied to the Xbox storefront.

This guide might address save files specific to Xbox Game Pass and the Xbox app, but theres no doubt that being able to retrieve your save files from any platform is important in any scenario. The videogames industry is constantly on the move, so its important to ensure that your progression, be it narrative or competitive, is safe in your own hands

How To Install Xbox Pc Games In Any Folder

1. When you have completed the above steps, open the Xbox app.

2. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner of the interface. If it shows a generic icon, you may not have signed in to your account. Sign in before proceeding to the next step.

3. The drop-down menu, that appears when you click your display picture, lets you access the Xbox PC app Settings. Head to the page.

4. Switch to the General Tab on the sidebar.

5. You should see an option that is labeled “Use advanced installation and management features”. If you don’t see it, you may have either not signed in to the app or opted in to the Insider Preview Program.

6. Toggle the option, and a new setting will appear. It will point to C:\XboxGames as the new folder where games will go in to.

7. Click the Change Folder button next to the option, and select a different directory. This is the global folder for Xbox games, so you can’t choose a new one for each game.

8. Go to any game’s page and click the Install button. It should show your new folder as the destination.

This is a welcome move for users with limited storage space on their C: drive. And even if you only have a single drive in your computer, you may still find it useful to have the option to choose where the games get installed. When the game gets installed, you can manage it from the Xbox app, and click the Browse button to open its folder in File Explorer.

Note: I tested this on Windows 11.

The Xbox App Will Let You Install Pc Games On Any Folder You Want

How to Play Xbox Games on PC Using Game Pass

Microsoft is reportedly changing the game installation experience for games on the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app for PC, allowing you to install them on any folder you choose. This is a big step in making the Microsoft Store a platform more similar to Steam when it comes to PC gaming. The information comes from The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsofts plans, but the company has also seemingly corroborated the report.

If youve ever tried to look into the apps installed through the Microsoft Store, youre probably familiar with the infamous WindowsApps folder. This is where all Microsoft Store apps and UWP apps are installed, and its a highly restricted folder that requires messing with system settings if you want to make any modifications to it. For games, this means its also very hard to back up your installed games in a different folder or drive, for example.

With an upcoming update to the Xbox app for PC, which is reportedly being tested internally, Microsoft will allow users to install their games in any folder or drive they want. This is good news for a few reasons. First off, if you have a slow internet connection, you may be able to back up your games so you dont have to redownload them if you reset your PC or you run out of space on your internal storage. Even with a fast connection, some games can take up over 100GB, so even decent connections take a while to download files of that size.

The Xbox App Finally Lets You Choose Where To Install Your Pc Games

Microsoft is finally updating the Xbox and Microsoft Store apps on Windows so you can specify a folder to install your games to. The change will be available soon to people who install the Xbox Insider Hub app and is expected to be in beta before the release of Halo Infinite on December 8, according to The Verge.

With the update, you’ll be able to choose a hard drive and a folder inside it as a location to install your game. Like any other program on your PC, you’ll be able to access the folders without Windows marking them as hidden, like it does currently with the WindowsApps folder.

The change removes the barriers Windows uses to prevent you from accessing your game files, which has kept people from installing and using mods. Some games currently allow mods, but they only allow you to access a dedicated mods folder. With this change, you’ll be able to install mods directly into your game files like you can do on Steam.

It’s unclear if the update to the Xbox and Microsoft Store app will fix an ongoing problem where Game Pass games won’t fully uninstall and clear up the space on your hard drive. Several users on Reddit and Resetera have reported this problem since 2019. With direct access to your files, you might be able to solve this problem by manually cleaning them out yourself.

In a video announcing the upcoming change, Microsoft also noted that downloading games will be faster through the app too.

Where Are Windows Games Stored

If you are a Windows 10 game player, you can search for games in different platforms. For example, Windows Store, Steam, as well as some other formal game downloading web sites. Windows Store and Steam are two commonly used platforms for you to download Windows 10 games.

The Windows 10 games downloaded files should be saved on a special location on your computer. But, you cant find that location after trying.

    Hi CoinFlyer98353,

Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. I’d be happy to help.

The games you play will create a saved folder for data locally but depending on where you bought the game, the cloud storage will also kick in. I know for Steam you have to check the game and make sure it has a cloud icon to know it supports it.

You should be able to move the files from your user files in the C: drive if you played from Game pass, you just would need to locate the game’s folder in the Program files section of your C: drive, which is where Steam installs by default.

You don’t need to be an Windows Insider to install the Xbox Game Pass for PC app. It requires Windows 10 and the Xbox app. What is the error you are getting when trying to install?

    Windows Store Games Install Location

I have recently installed 2 games and from the windows store. I chose to install them on a separate SSD opposed to the default location drive. Now I know which SSD in which they were installed but after searching all folders on said SSD, I can’t find any of the executables in which to create shortcuts and/or add the games to STEAM. Please if you have any information regarding how I can find the exact install locations so that I can get access to these executable files then that would be great.Thanks.

Hi, if these are universal apps they won’t use exe files. Also, the folder in which apps are stored is protected .If you have a shortcut for them in the start menu, you can drag one from the start menu. Please clarify which type of program they are.If you use a program like Ultrasearch or Locate32 or Everything by Void Tools these index all files and folders fast, and you can get instant find-as-you-type results. Many here like these.

The first thing we need to do is tell Windows to install new apps in the target drive or partition. Once you do that, you can install Game Pass games in that specific drive.

    1. First, open the PC Settings app by pressing the keyboard shortcut Win + I. In the Settings app, go to the System Storage page. On the right page, click on the Change where new content is saved link under More Storage Settings section.

    2. Under the New apps will save to option, select your target drive from the drop-down menu and click on the Apply button. In my case, I want to save the games on my G drive. So, I selected that drive from the drop-down menu.

Game Pass For Pc Game Installation Location

    Good Afternoon,

From someone who has a mild case of OCD, the ability to add the feature for you to be able to select a location where you install each game seems like it would be a fairly simple thing to do.

    For Example:

I use a F:\Games\ drive specifically to install my games into. I found where to allow windows 10 to install “apps” onto that drive, but of course all kinds of extra folders are added such as my profile folder, a program files folder, and WUDownloadCache, WindowsApps, WPsystem, DeliveryOptimization.

When installing the Xbox Pass application, the option to be able specify where they folders land, or containing them in a root folder such as “Xbox Game Pass” seems that it would clean things up tremendously.

Is this an option I missed during my installation of the app or a buried setting somewhere? As I don’t like the way it decided to install on my root drive and didn’t even bother asking me or provide the option to install the xbox game pass elsewhere.

How To Fix Xbox Game Pass On PC Games Won’t Install | Easy Steps 2021

Here’s how you can jump ship from Xbox Game Pass to Steam, without losing your game saves

Xbox Game Pass is undeniably a great service. From facilitating access to a plethora of titles from Sea of Thieves to Rocket League for a low price, to closing the gap between PC and console gaming through the Xbox app, Microsoft has managed to build a platform that caters to a wide variety of gamers.

Game Pass is a breath of fresh air for many PC gamers, especially in comparison to Microsofts previous Games for Windows service. While Steam might be the current crowned prince of PC platforms, Microsofts new formula is sure to entice some gamers to ditch their loyalty to Valves dominating platform.

Despite being such an attractive service, there are some DRM quirks and issues that come with using the Xbox app for gaming, which might make you want to jump ship and swim to another platform, such as Steam. While this would usually mean having to leave your hard work behind, its actually possible to bring your save files with you.

Its not too difficult to do this, either. The process simply involves finding where Steam saves the game and moving the Xbox save files to this folder, replacing the Steam save files. Weve outlined this process below, so you can follow through step by step to make sure youre getting it right.
