Brave The Cold: The Long Dark
The Long Dark is an incredible survival experience that is quintessential to the genre. Set in the bitter climbs of the Canadian Rockies, The Long Dark sports both an on-going story mode and an endless sandbox mode, challenging you to manage your temperature, your thirst, and your hunger in a lonely apocalyptic wilderness filled with animals driven mad by a climatological catastrophe. The Long Dark’s dynamic systems and emergent gameplay make for some of my most memorable gameplay experiences of recent times.

Throwback Review: Lost Odyssey
Lost Odyssey is a turn-based JRPG and one of the most well known titles in the genre on Xbox 360. A lot of its fame comes from being created by the godfather of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi. It was the Xboxs answer to that well-known series, back during the times when none of the Final Fantasy titles were available on the platform. It was also the second game from Mistwalker, made specifically for Xbox. The first one was their critically-acclaimed Blue Dragon which, just by looking at the art, you knew was their take on Dragon Quest.
Even though the Microsoft console wasnt big in Japan , this still was the turning point for the company. It showed that there was, indeed, interest in RPGs in the country especially of the turn-based variety. It wasnt the first turn-based game on the console . Nor was it the bestselling one. Yet, it ended up being regarded as the best exclusive turn-based JRPG on the Xbox 360 or any Xbox to come after. After that success, however, Blue Dragon went on to work on some DS sequels. Lost Odyssey, as such, has yet to get a sequel. But what was it about Lost Odyssey that made it so great that even today, there are people still clamoring for a continuation to this great RPG? And no, it isnt just me there are others I think.
The Elder Scrolls Iv: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion earned praise for its player customization, which includes ten customizable races. It had a multi-platform release for systems like the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. A Game of the Year Edition and 5th Anniversary Edition released for the Xbox 360.
This single-player adventure joined the ranks as one of the great The Elder Scrolls games in 2006. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion pushed the envelope with scenic places of interest. It takes place in the province of Cyrodii, a place that borders Skyrim and Morrowind.

The Best Rpgs For Xbox Series X
If theres one genre the Xbox series of consoles has struggled to really break into in the past, its RPGs. Yes, each system had a standout title or two, like the original Xbox having Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the 360 having Lost Odyssey, but this particular family of consoles was always seen as secondary to RPG fans compared to Sony, or even Nintendo, machines. With the release of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft has made a strong effort to fill that gap in their library and has already done a great job of publishing, or at least supporting, some of the best RPGs in recent memory.

What counts as an RPG today covers a wide range of games. They can be turn-based, real-time, action-focused, narrative-focused, first-person, and more. So many games incorporate RPG elements now that it can be a little tough to find one that doesnt anymore. However, for this list, were picking only games that are RPGs at their core or at least have it as the main component rather than a game that just throws in progression bars and nothing else. Still, that leaves a lot of ground to cover. If youre feeling the itch for a new RPG to play on your Xbox Series X, weve picked out the best from a range of titles that should fill the exact experience youre looking for.
Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark
Released for the PC, the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4 Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark is an indie developed tactical turn-based RPG that is inspired by the strategy JRPGs Tactics Ogre and of Final Fantasy Tactics.
Despite its humble beginnings and Western development team, Fell Seal looks and plays like the true modern-day successor to the aforementioned tactics games from the 90s. The game has an excellent soundtrack with a good mature story and hours worth of side-quests and sub-plots.

Shining In The Darkness
Long before Xbox was even a twinkle in Bill Gates eye, a short-lived battle of the JRPGs took place on warring consoles as Final Fantasy flew the flag of Nintendo and Shining Force pledged allegiance to Sega. Xbox players can relive those heady days through Xbox 360s Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection. While follow-ups Shining Force and Shining Force 2 better reflect traditional JRPGs, 1991s first-person dungeon-crawler Shining in the Darkness is more important, not only for establishing the series, but for bringing Japanese role-players to the west.

Pier Solar And The Great Architects
Another JRPG with questionable J status thanks to its development by a small indie team from across the globe, Pier Solar has a strange background, starting out as a homebrew game for the Mega Drive in 2010 no, thats not a typo. The Xbox One port arrived in 2014, a year before the Dreamcast port , and delivered a 16-bit-inspired role-playing game about a trio of friends searching for a magical herb to cure the heros father. Mechanical niggles hold Pier Solar back from greatness, but the substantive shortcomings are more than made up for by its sublime, retro-worshipping style.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is set in the same universe as Divinity: Original Sin, with the plot focusing on monsters invading the world due to a weakening between the veil that keeps it separate from the void.
Despite being a common premise in fantasy RPG games, the writing was praised almost universally, with specific reference being given to the games varied cast of characters.Gameplay-wise, players can create their own character, after which they either go solo or team up with three other party members, all of which are fully playable.
The ability to individually control each character leads to a complex turn-based battle system that is still cited as one of the greatest ever made.

B Or Not 2b: Nier: Automata
This PlatinumGames black sheep was already a critical hit when it hit the Xbox One back in 2018. It’s sort of an anomaly a sequel to a successful but divisive 2010 game and a spinoff to the more well-known Drakengard series. Yet, NieR:Automata manages to be one of the most unique gaming experience on Xbox. Its hack-and-slash gameplay balances well with a profound story about the nature of existence, some wild sequences, and one of the most incredible video game soundtracks ever made.

What Is An Rpg Game
An RPG is a Role-Playing Game. The concept of RPGs originated in the ’60s and ’70s, with the creation of tabletop games like Tunnels and Trolls and Dungeons and Dragons. The idea was that you created a character and role-played as this character in worlds full of danger, monsters, treasure, and adventure.
As these games became more complex, it was inevitable that they would begin to appear on the computer. Early games were simplistic, providing the user with a 3D maze with various encounters along the way. Early games on the PC included many AD& D type games, and one of the more detailed games is TheBards Tale. These games featured poor graphics, far too many random events, and not much storyline.
Eventually though, as the games became more sophisticated and the industry began to produce true 3D games like Doom, the genre took off. When The Elder Scrolls appeared on the PC, the world of computer RPGs changed forever.
Today, you are able to enjoy the depth and beauty of RPGs by yourself or with hundreds of other users online. This article covers some of the best RPGs on the Xbox 360. It is not an exhaustive list, but hopefully, it gives you some insight.
Pillars Of Eternity Ii: Deadfire
Created as a spiritual successor to the Baldurs Gate series, Pillars of Eternity helped usher in a new wave if classically inspired CRPGs for a modern audience. The sequel Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was released in 2018 for the PC and consoles in early 2020 and improved on everything that its predecessor did.
The writing, dialogue, and voice acting are on another level, and the dialogue choices are exactly what one would expect from a game with a branching narrative. The turn-based combat was added into the game later, but whether players choose to real-time or turn-based they will be in for one of the best RPGs of the generation.

The Legend Of Heroes: Trials In The Sky
Developer: Nihon FalcomPublisher: Xseed GamesPlatform: PC, PS3, PS Vita, PSP
The Legend of Heroes: Trials in the Sky was the first entry into what would later become known as the Trials Series.
The game was actually released in 2004, but it didnt see an English port until seven years later in 2011, a testament to how well the game aged during those years.
The Legend of Heroes: Trials in the Sky saw a higher level of success in the West than the East, as is evident by the Japanese-exclusive remakes for the PSP and PS Vita it received in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
Its a JRPG that isnt ideal for casual fans, but if you have an active interest in old-school Japanese RPGs, especially turn-based ones, this is a game that you cant miss.
The gameplay itself is a grid-based, dual-map system that places combat in a separate space to the overworld. You control a cast of characters, completing quests as you go to advance the story.
Trials in the Skys combat system isnt anything out of the ordinary, but it was one of the earliest titles to implement it this effectively. There are several different attack-type categories, each of which drains a certain resource bar.
While the gameplay wasnt overly original, even in 2004, the game did receive praise for its story and writing quality, staying relatively true to the original vision even through localization.

Tactical Team Deathmatch: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was my first real taste of Xbox Live and the defining title of my teens. The 16-player team death matches were unmatched at the time, and the single-player campaign was exciting, tactical, and not held down by the cinematic set pieces that bog down many of today’s action games. While recent Ghost Recon titles continue to disappoint, my heart will always have a soft spot for this early 360 classic.
