Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time
Ubisoft realized that The Prince of Persia IP had laid dormant for far too long, which is it decided to completely reboot it. And that new take on the series resulted in a third-person action/adventure game that breathed some life right back into the franchise. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was and still is a worthwhile experience thanks to its free-flowing swordplay and cool usage of time-based powers that played a part in navigating puzzles & parkour. This game feels like an Indiana Jones-like trek through fantastical locales filled with wild enemies to slash and trippy platforming segments to beat.

The original Xbox is almost 20 years old, and we’ve rounded up the 20 best games on the platform.
It’s been more than 20 years since Microsoft made its foray into console gaming with the Xbox. Many of the most popular Xbox franchises today–including Halo and Forza–made their debut on the rather large black box. The 42 Best Original Xbox Games Of All Time
At one point, the only juggernauts in console gaming were considered to be Sega, Nintendo, and Sony. After Sega decided to bow out of the console hardware race, a shocking new challenger rose up to make their presence felt. Shockingly, that newfound gaming entity ended up being Microsoft.
Their contribution to the world of console gaming came in the form of a massive black box outfitted with a big green “X” icon placed smack dab in the middle of it. That powerful machine is known as the original Xbox.
On November 15, 2001, gamers in the States got the chance to pick up their very own Xbox and get enamored with all the graphical & mechanical upgrades that came with it. Before the ball dropped to ring in the new year, the original Xbox managed to sell 1.5 million units before 2001 came to an end. The Xbox is most known for several things – the first “Duke” controller , the signature atomic green color associated with the box itself, the implementation of online play through the Xbox Live, etc.
Another aspect of the original Xbox that’s still looked back on quite fondly is its strong software library. Besides all the first-party heavy hitters that launched on it, there’s also a nice lineup of third-party titles that will forever be associated with Microsoft’s beloved black and green gaming box.

Stubbs The Zombie In Rebel Without A Pulse
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is an action game that was released in 2005 on the Xbox and was released on Steam in 2007 but later removed. This game is set in the 1930s and follows a salesman named Edward who is trying to make a living during the Great Depression when things take a turn for the worst. After his girlfriend’s father kills him, he’s left for dead for over 20 years. In the 1950s, he rises from the grave as a zombie and starts the zombie apocalypse.
This game’s main goal is to control Edward, known now as Stubbs, as he tries to feast on all the humans that he possibly can and create as many zombies as he can in order to help him. This game has become fairly hard to find. Just the disc by itself costs around $75, but the average price for a complete copy is a cool $104. With a new Stubbs game on the horizon, that price could rise further still.
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & Ii
A Dreamcast favorite, Phantasy Star Online was a riveting action-RPG. It also proved to be a harbinger of things to come with its $10 per month always-online price tag, but in return you got an absolutely incredible connected world that allowed you to make friends and slay monsters together, with your MAGs looking over your shoulders. If PSO got its hooks into you, they went in deep, and the result was one of the most memorable original Xbox games ever made.24. MVP Baseball 2005

Buying Original Xbox Games Physically
If you prefer physical game discs, getting started with original Xbox backward compatibility will be a little more difficult. If you already have a game, simply insert the disc and go. However, new buyers will need to search around to secure original Xbox games at a reasonable price point.
With these games no longer in print, buying certain original Xbox titles still sealed comes with a huge asking price. Some second-hand titles are also still worth a fair amount than you’d expect, with many becoming increasingly rare after years off the market. When factoring in the additional appeal from backward compatibility on Xbox One, buying discs simply isn’t recommended for most gamers. Regardless, if you’re looking to purchase these games on Amazon, expect to be looking at between $50 and $100 for new games, with second-hand pricing varying between titles.
What Games Are Available With Xbox Backward Compatibility
There are 100s of Xbox 360 titles available as part of the backward compatibility scheme and a decent selection of original Xbox games.
Games like the original Guitar Hero and Rock Band series won’t work as they require proprietary accessories that aren’t compatible, nor do any that require with the original Kinect motion camera. Even if you have the Xbox One Kinect, it will not be compatible with previous Xbox 360 Kinect games.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
While Grand Theft Auto III was the first game in the controversial franchise to make the leap to 3D, it was Vice City that really capitalized on the new perspective. Set in a fictional version of Miami comprised of two islands, Vice City starred Tommy Vercetti, a mobster who just finished a 15-year prison sentence for murder. Though Vice City had an interesting story and excellent variety of missions, much of the fun came from using the vibrant world as a playground to see what kind of trouble you could stir up. Rockstar Games nailed the 1980s setting, and Vice City is arguably still the best locale in series history.
Outrun 200: Coast 2 Coast

However, Microsoft promptly discontinued support for the console after the launch of the Xbox 360. The last new game for the console came out in 2008, while Xbox Live was discontinued in 2010.

Otogi: Myth Of Demons
Long before From Software made it big as the developers of Dark Souls, the talented team made the Xbox-exclusive ninja action game Otogi: Myth of Demons . It was beautiful, polished, precise, smart, and action-packed, and it did so half a year before Ninja Gaiden came out. Is it as good as Itagaki’s classic? No, but it remains one of the best games exclusive or otherwise to ever grace the Xbox.

Legacy Of The Microsoft Xbox
Up until 2000 there was a large distinction between console games and PC games, but with the upcoming release of the PlayStation 2 that line became blurred and Microsoft feared gamers would be drawn to the new console and away from PC gaming. To counter this a team at Microsoft began work on a DirectX based game console dubbed the DirectX Box and on November 15th, 2001 the Xbox was released.
The Xboxs launch line-up consisted of 12 titles, including one of the best selling games ever, Halo: Combat Evolved. Some other popular launch titles were Dead or Alive 3 and Project Gotham Racing. Later in its life the Xbox would see hits such as Tom Clancys Splinter Cell, Ninja Gaiden, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In late 2002 Microsoft launched their Xbox Live online service, along with flagship online titles such as MechAssault and Tom Clancys Ghost Recon.
A total of 968 games have been released for the Xbox, including such best selling titles as: Halo 2, Fable, Grand Theft Auto Double Pack, Counter-Strike, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Need for Speed: Underground 2, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Star Wars: Battlefront, and more.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
When Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came out for Xbox, it wasn’t just a big deal because the game was absolutely incredible. It was a big deal because it was the first time that a Grand Theft Auto game released day and date on Xbox along with PS2. The biggest series in the world finally gave equal time to Xbox, and San Andreas was Rockstar’s most ambitious effort yet.
It was primarily centered in Los Santos, GTA’s fictional Los Angeles, but its vast real estate spanned an entire state, including San Fierro , Las Venturas , and the rural areas in between. It lives on in memories today.

Fable: The Lost Chapters
Remember the hype around No Man’s Sky in the years leading up to its release? It was mightily similar to the anticipation around Lionhead Studios’ Fable. It also shared a similar fate at launch due to absence of many talked-about features. Granted, Fable was still positively received by fans and critics, but it wasn’t the revelatory and novel experience that was promised. It was also pretty short by role-playing game standards. By the time the game started really hitting its stride, it was almost over. Fable: The Lost Chapters remedied this issue by adding new quests, areas, weapons, monsters, and more, which helped Fable feel far more fully realized. Though The Lost Chapters didn’t turn Fable into the game that was expected, it did add enough to round out an excellent action-RPG that holds up pretty well today.

What About Limited Edition Xbox Consoles
The stats providedabove purely for the standard original Xbox. However, Microsoft did release acouple of special edition Xbox consoles back in the day, and the prices onthose consoles can differ significantly from the launch unit.
One of the most notable and widely-available limited edition Xbox consoles out there is the Halo Limited Edition Xbox combo. As the original Xboxs flagship franchise, Halo shipped as a pack in-game alongside the special edition translucent green console. The system starts at $230 from third-party sellers on Amazon and around $130 used on eBay.
The neon-green Mountain Dew Limited Edition Xbox was only made available as part of a sweepstakes in 2004. Only 5000 units were given away to lucky winners, but collectors are still looking to buy the system today. On eBay, these consoles start for around $300, and sellers are getting as much $950 for them in the right condition.
How Does Xbox Backward Compatibility Work
The Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are able to play Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through emulation software that makes your console think it’s a last generation machine for the purposes of playing classic games.
When a supported game is started on the machine, the current or last-gen console opens the emulator and, in all regards, the game works as if it was running on an Xbox 360 or 2001 Xbox. The opening screen appears first then the game will load.
All other aspects and features that would normally be available on an Xbox 360 or Xbox are available on the Xbox One/Series X/S too, including the hub on the former . In addition, all new features of the more recent Xbox consoles work, including the ability to take screen grabs and record and share video of gameplay.
Xbox Series X/S owners get additional bonuses too, with the latest consoles able to play many of the backward compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games with Auto HDR enabled. This adds virtual high dynamic range contrast and colours to make the titles look better. Plus, many titles have FPS Boost enabled. This ups the frame rate the fames play in, which provides a smoother experience.
