Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth
The Xbox isnt short of great survival horror games, but this malevolent reimagining of HP Lovecrafts The Shadow Over Innsmouth is easily one of the best. While your adventure is extremely linear, its filled with memorable setpieces – including a frantic chase through a dilapidated hotel – and offers numerous interesting game mechanics including a clever damage system that affects your on-screen avatar in numerous ways depending on where on their body theyve been injured. The end result is a creepy, unsettling adventure that will stay with you long after youve completed it.
Grand Theft Auto V / Gta Online
Grand Theft Auto Vs sprawling, meticulously detailed map is still the high-water mark to which all other modern open-world adventures aspire. Not only is it huge, its impossibly dense with excellent content and thats not just the driving and shooting that make up its campaign, nor is it limited to the numerous side activities that could amount to a full game on their own but one rich with all the sights, sounds, and bustling activity you’d expect to find in a city teeming with humans, seedy underbelly included.
Its single-player story is an engaging crime epic, one that smartly conveys Rockstars satirical take on the 21-st century American dream through three different playable characters, and when youve finally rolled credits on that – after some 30-plus hours – theres literally years worth of content to dig into in its multiplayer component, GTA Online.
Featuring everything from elaborate multi-phase heists to custom high-stakes racing to flying DeLoreans and Mad Max-style vehicular deathmatches, Grand Theft Auto Online offers unparalleled variety, and with so much to do, explore, and play with, both with friends and on your own, theres no question that GTA 5 remains the best Xbox One game ever.

The Elder Scrolls Iii: Morrowind
Skyrim may be the most popular from The Elder Scrolls series, but Morrowind hailed PC developer Bethesdas leap to a console with enough power to realise a massive open-ended open-world role-playing game, where the main plot came secondary to letting you explore as you please. It was enough to make players forgive the myriad bugs or dodgy first-person combat. Coming full circle, Bethesda is now of course part of the Xbox family.

Nier: Automata: Become As Gods Edition
Nier: Automata is the weirdest game on this list, but thats what makes it a must-play. It masquerades as an anime action game in a post-apocalyptic world. And while it very much is an anime action game in a post-apocalyptic world, its got a ton of interesting mechanics and storytelling techniques boiling beneath its surface.
Automata is an existential meditation on consciousness and purpose. Its got charm and darkness. There are goofy, singing robots and brutal destruction. And it all unfolds over multiple playthroughs of a similar campaign. Each replay offers new details and missions to uncover, and it all plays into a larger mystery.
Its game director Yoko Taros magnum opus, and its not to be missed.

It’s 20 years since Microsoft launched the first Xbox
X marks the spot
On November 15, 2001, there was a serious shake-up in the console wars as Microsoft entered the ring with Xbox, launching first in North America, with Japan, Europe and Australia getting to join in a few months later.
Even as one of the richest companies in the world, success was not guaranteed, but over the past two decades, major innovations and memorable franchises have truly cemented its place in gaming history.
A commitment to broadband and a hard drive in the original Xbox was the kind of long-term thinking that propelled Xbox Live as what online gaming is today, while Xbox 360 became one of the most successful and longest running console generations, which didnt just see the rise of HD, but also indie games through Xbox Live Arcade.
There were some disasters too Kinect is something the platform holder would rather forget existed, while its basically recovering from the awful initial strategy of Xbox One. Yet it has learned and emerged a stronger player, building up its portfolio with major acquisitions like Mojang and Bethesda, taking its history seriously through backward compatibility, and through Game Pass opening the doors for players to discover more games than ever.

Zombie Apocalypse: Left 4 Dead 2
At the dawn of the zombie obsession that infected pop culture in the late aughts came Left 4 Dead 2, a perfect sequel that improved on just about everything from the first game. The replay value of Left 4 Dead 2 is something developers chase with every new live service game, but Valve knocked it out of the park on their second try. If only they could count to three …

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2
Open world games could learn a lot from Tony Hawk’s, the gorgeous and luxurious recreating of a proper bit of PS1 royalty. These games aren’t strictly open-world affairs as Ubisoft might make them, but each classic location feels like a universe in and of itself – roll around, jump, grind and link tricks together while ticking off a series of jobs that should be meaningless busywork but turn out to be anything but.
The genius here, alongside the beautifully simple controls and the wonderfully evocative impact animations, is that Tony Hawk is one of those games that doesn’t just give you a sport, but an entire world, an entire subculture with its own colours and excesses. This is one of those games that makes movement a sheer delight. Play it and be immersed.

Remnant: From The Ashes
Remnant: From the Ashes is Dark Souls by way of Gears of War. Instead of animation-locked melee combat like in FromSoftwares titles, Remnant From the Ashes is a third-person shooter with a unique roster of bizarre guns. But despite the games much longer combat range, it manages to replicate the tension of the hyper-difficult games its developers were clearly inspired by. Its punishing, and you only have so many swigs of your health potion before you go down for good.
Remnant From the Ashes is for more than just masochists, though. As a game you can optionally play in co-op, it offers a major difficulty step up from playing Gears of War on the couch with your buddies. Each player is able to customize their loadout to help the group succeed. And when youre working together with your partner, it delivers one of the best campaign multiplayer experiences in recent memory.

Ori And The Will Of The Wisps
A heart-warming platformer
Reasons to avoid
For years, Ori and the Blind Forest was one of our favorite Metroidvania 2D dungeon crawlers on Xbox One – it was heartfelt, beautiful and challenging, and the world simply oozed personality and intrigue. Years later, Moon Studios and Microsoft Ori and the Will of the Wisps, the first game’s sequel that sees Ori and his makeshift family separated in an all-new environment.
The new game in the series adds some new combat elements like a shard system that allows for more customization of Ori’s abilities, while big boss battles help to make it more memorable and break up the puzzle-solving.
If you need something a bit smaller than the average 40-hour RPG, and something less brutal than the latest first-person shooter, Ori offers a 12-hour challenge in a hauntingly beautiful world. It’s one of the best Xbox One games there is.
Halo: Master Chief Collection
*braces for complaints* Yes, we are well aware of the problems that plagued this particular entry, but now that it works, there’s no doubting the craftsmanship here and its place in our best Xbox One games list. Buffed-up, revarnished and back in the shop window, The Master Chief Collection leaves us to wonder if Halo always looked so lovely. And you know what? It more or less did.
