A Plague Tale: Innocence

Best Games On Xbox Game Pass
  • X|S Enhanced: Yes
  • File Size: 41 GB

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a 14th-century alternate history story with fantasy elements that follows two noble siblings chased out of their home by the English. Set during the advent of the bubonic plague, the two find themselves wrapped up in a larger-than-life plot to find a cure for the Black Death while evading both political and religious forces that have their own ambitions. Despite its fascinating overarching narrative, the game is mostly centered around its heroes’ relationships and their fight for survival. Fans of triple-A blockbusters will feel right at home going through Plague Tale’s stealth-action gameplay. The game has a very satisfying sense of progression on account of its naturally evolving plot, solid gameplay mechanics, and the intriguing player abilities obtained throughout the game.

Just Keep Swimming: A Memoir Blue

A short but moving tale published by Annapurna Interactive, A Memoir Blue is a recent addition to Game Pass, but one that certainly leaves an impression. The game describes itself as an interactive poem, and follows a swimming champion reflecting on her life and relationship with her mother. Gameplay involves interacting with various items and parts of scenery as the protagonist ventures through abstract and metaphorical scenarios, piecing together her memories. While gameplay is simple, each item is beautifully animated, and the short runtime of just over an hour means it is easily accessible for any Game Pass user.

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Nintendo may have Paper Mario, but over on the Xbox there’s the delightful Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling that features a trio of heroes on a quest to find fame, fortune, and immortality. Colorful, charming, and an absolute delight to play, Bug Fables is a superb mix of RPG turn-based strategy with whimsical storytelling.

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

Ugh, I love Metroidvanias. I especially love them when theyre themed after Castlevania. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the long-awaited game from Koji Igarashi, former Castlevania series director. Originally started as a Kickstarter project, the game was quickly funded and fans waited in excited anticipation.

And Ive got to say, Bloodstained lived up to all the hype. Although youre not playing as a member of the famed Belmont clan or even Draculas dhampir son, the story is no less compelling. Playing as Miriam, one of the last living Shardbinders, you enter a massive demonic castle to save the world from impending doom. As you traverse the castle, youll fight all manner of abominations, but dont worry, youll get plenty of weapons and supernatural abilities to beat back the denizens of darkness. And similar to other Castlevania games, theres more going on than meets the eye.

If you have one, I highly recommend playing this game on a 4K HDR TV or display. Its just that pretty.

    Star Wars Battlefront Ii

Yes, Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched as a mess, and it may never recover from the stink of the microtransaction-laden progression that was infamously pulled hours before launch. Thankfully, though the Battlefront 2 of 2021 is a much better game, and more complete, too.

In the four years since launch, EA and DICE have added Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker content, Clone Wars updates, and even content from Solo . Its essentially a Star Wars toybox, and theres never been a better time to jump in.

    Star Wars Battlefront 2

    Don

Game Pass Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Another perfectly-suited Game Pass game, Battlefront 2 is ultimate casual blaster and, after a rough launch, now a very good attempt at capturing the crunchy, breezy fun of the originals. It’s not the most sophisticated, but it was never meant to be – the attention to detail is, instead, found in the sumptuous environments, the immaculate sounds, and the silliness of the voice acting, with nods to all of the films and plenty of the cultier cartoons and series that came in between. A carefree blast.

    Best Xbox Game Pass Games

    Game
    • Cost if purchased: $29.99
    • Where to play: PC, Console, Cloud

Tunic is an isometric action game where you play as a small fox whos stranded in a ruined land. It plays a lot like Zelda but also incorporates elements of difficulty akin to souls-like titles. Though not necessarily on that scale.

If you love adventure seeking games with RPG elements, Tunic is a great throw back to those kinds of games that mix RPG and action. And despite its similarities to Zelda, Tunic is unique and has plenty of gameplay features to call its own.

As one of the newest games on Game Pass, we also feel its one of the best ones you can sink some time into right now.

    • Cost if purchased: $19.99
    • Where to play: PC, Console, Cloud

Sable is a charming action & adventure game that will have you exploring large patches of desert sands as you go through your right of passage called the Gliding. Hop on your hover bike , and embark on your journey of discovery. The game features loads of puzzles and very little combat. So youre definitely getting a much more laid back experience here when playing.

If youre the type of player that likes to figure things out, youll probably love Sable. It requires the player to do much of the exploration without a ton of hand holding. But not so much so that you should find it extremely difficult to figure out what to do.

On top of all that the cell-shaded visuals and vast landscapes are a pretty nice feast for the eyes.

    New Super Luckys Tale

If youre a fan of 3D platforming adventures, then New Super Luckys Tale is one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass that you can play. Taking control of the titular Lucky, a too-cute-for-words cartoon fox, youll head on a mission that sees you visit multiple worlds, fight ferocious bosses and save numerous new friends.

Theres a lot to love in New Super Luckys Tale. Theres a mixture of open-world levels, letting you explore an environment freely. Some levels are instead 2D, where youll need to control Lucky left to right, collecting coins and defeating enemies as you go. Other levels are more puzzle-based, having you work your brain a little in order to beat it. Theres a huge variety of content on offer, and its delivered in a beautifully colourful package. Its one of our favourite platform games of recent years, for sure.

    Remnant: From The Ashes

Remnant: From the Ashes is Dark Souls by way of Gears of War. Instead of animation-locked melee combat like in FromSoftwares titles, Remnant From the Ashes is a third-person shooter with a unique roster of bizarre guns. But despite the games much longer combat range, it manages to replicate the tension of the hyper-difficult games its developers were clearly inspired by. Its punishing, and you only have so many swigs of your health potion before you go down for good.

Remnant From the Ashes is for more than just masochists, though. As a game you can optionally play in co-op, it offers a major difficulty step up from playing Gears of War on the couch with your buddies. Each player is able to customize their loadout to help the group succeed. And when youre working together with your partner, it delivers one of the best campaign multiplayer experiences in recent memory.

Golfing has never been more relaxing or stress-inducing than in Golf With Your Friends. This casual golfing title might seem like an enjoyable co-op experience for a group of friends to partake in. But beneath this seemingly tranquil surface is a turbulent and infuriating game that will break friendships instead of clubs. Easing a golf ball into a hole becomes a practice in impossibility thanks to convoluted courses. From water falls to ghosts to black holes, an array of jaw-dropping obstacles stand in the way of making par. Is it annoying to sink every swing on a single hole? Yes. Is it easy to get lost in the dazzle of new courses? Most certainly. Is it an immense amount of fun to play? Always.

Dragon Quest 1: Echoes Of An Elusive Age

Dragon Quest 11 is one of the best entries in the long-running Square Enix series. Its a traditional JRPG through and through, with turn-based battles and an epic save-the-world story starring an unlikely hero. While Dragon Quest 11 doesnt necessarily take any big risks, its a masterpiece within a genre that isnt nearly as prevalent as it once was. That alone makes Dragon Quest 11 a wonderful game for those who yearn for JRPGs similar to those from the late ’90s and early 2000s. With a colorful art design, brilliant turn-based gameplay, and a large world inhabited by interesting characters, Dragon Quest 11 is immensely satisfying and dutifully scratches the JRPG itch.
