Torment: Tides Of Numenera

Top 20 NEW RPGs of 2022

PC | Xbox

Torment: Tides of Numenera is a title acting as a successor to the classic RPG Planescape: Torment. In this game, players are taken into the distant future. In this world, a god of sorts has found a way to leave his body and move his consciousness into a new vessel which essentially made him immortal. This discovery has triggered the universe to send out an enmity known as The Sorrow, a being thats aimed to destroy this person and all of the vessels hes used in the past.

Players are taking the role of the Last Castoff, basically, the final vessel that this unknown man used to stay alive. Now with no memories of what you did in the past and knowing that The Sorrow is also tracking you down, our protagonist is left with no hope but to find this ancient man and attempt to fight off The Sorrow.

Best Xbox Rpgs: Bottom Line

The very definition of what makes an RPG an RPG is evolving all the time, as developers blend genres to find new and unique games for us to peruse and enjoy. Games like The Witcher 3 and Final Fantasy XV take a more open-world approach, while games like Pillars of Eternity and Dragon Quest XI call back to a more classic turn-based style. This list is only the beginning, as we expand to cover many of the major RPGs in the upcoming Xbox games list in the coming months.

While it was panned by critics for broken promises from its marketing cycle and past-gen versions, I had an absolute blast with Cyberpunk 2077, which despite issues, was easily my favorite game of 2020. It doesn’t play particularly well on the base Xbox One and PS4, but if you have higher-end PC or an Xbox Series X, the issues are nowhere near as prevalent. Although, you may want to hold for the official Xbox Series X-enhanced version. In Cyberpunk 2077, you play as V, a merc for hire in a violent corporate hellscape. Your decisions have major ramifications on the outcome of the game, which gives you a large degree of freedom for tailoring how you tackle challenges and combat in this cybernetically enhanced wide-open world.

Q: What Is An Rpg Character Class

Character classes are a staple feature of most RPG games. Oftentimes players will get the chance to choose their own character class. Character classes dictate the role your character will play throughout the gaming experience. These classes exist to offer gamers differing experiences and to allow players to choose the play style that best suits them. These classes will have specific abilities, statistics, and even physical design differences that make them unique. For example, the medic role is one of support. The medic or healer isnt the flashiest class but their involvement is integral to the success of the party. There are also classes that specialize in combat, these players are often found wreaking havoc on the front lines.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Sitting at 29 sq. mi, Red Dead Redemption 2isn’t just big, it’s really bigâreally, really big, even. The game is one of the highest-rated open-world titles ever released by anyone.

This game is what a lot of new open-world games aspire to be, and that is all thanks to the very detailed and carefully crafted world of Red Dead Redemption 2. This game has great characters and a great story and has won countless awards from many different sources. It is still not a perfect game for everyone, but the environment and believability on offer are still unmatched.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Xbox One Rpg Games Out Now

While Halo: The Master Chief Collection doesn’t actually have an Xbox One-era Halo game, its still a must-have for any Xbox One first-person shooter fans. If youre new to Halo then this is the way to experience the four main Halo games as well as the seminal Halo: Reach and the decent Halo: ODST. There are modern enhancements, notably with Halo 2 sporting a rather fine makeover, as well as the original Halo: Combat Evolved looking much better after a lick of modern graphical paint. We particularly enjoyed be able to bounce between original graphics modes and the enhancements to see how far the tech has come.

And the combat, level design and story tends to hold up rather well by modern standards, though some of the later missions in the original Halo can feel a little repetitive.

You also get all the multiplayer modes of the six games in one interface. That means theres a huge amount of online combat to be had, with a myriad of game modes to choose from. Just be aware that there are some very seasoned Halo players out there and are well-equipped to trounce you if youre lacking in FPS skill. Theres also support for classic split-screen multiplayer, which may feel novel in 2022, but is nevertheless a fun way to spice up an evening with some friends.

PC | Xbox | Nintendo

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is certainly one of the more iconic Star Wars video game titles to have ever released. This is an RPG title that follows a character who manages to escape with their lives when a Sith Lord takes over a Republic ship. Its a long RPG journey full of mystery and adventure. Its certainly a game that if you havent played yet then it should be enjoyed today. Although you might have to overlook some of the visuals and mechanics as it can be pretty dated compared to modern standards. Regardless, if youre a Star Wars fan its a must-play. Nier: Automata Become As Gods Edition

Top 15 Action-RPG Xbox One Games | whatoplay

Games like Nier: Automata dont see the light of day very often sequels which possess little to no name recognition to drive sales and justify production costs. However, when the cover of that game features the name of a beloved developer Platinum Games it already draws attention. Known for their work on Bayonetta, the Osaka-based developer possessed the know-how on the creation of an engaging action universe and exceptional character design. So, when Nier: Automata released in 2017, it sparked interest in almost everyone and quickly became one of the defining video game experiences of the current generation.

Revolving around three androids 2B, 9S, and A2 it tells a complex story about humanitys ongoing struggle against an invading army of machines. Taking place within a post-apocalyptic world, it provides an unforgettable environment for taking on mechanical foes of often massive proportions. And to provide an equally amazing theme for each encounter and event, Nier: Automata also features one of the best soundtracks youll ever hear, which by itself earned it numerous awards. Just listen to tracks like Bipolar Nightmare or Song of the Ancients and youll soon understand why.

Underrated: Tales Of Vesperia

It’s not surprising that this Tales game for Xbox 360 managed to fall under radar, given its JRPG flair that didn’t quite connect to a mostly Western audience. Naturally, this was also the case for the largely-unchanged remaster for Xbox One released a decade later. It’s a shame, as this may just be one of the best JRPG experiences on the console.

Many Tales fans regard Vesperia as one of the strongest entries in this ARPG series to date. This is thanks to its memorable story, vibrant worlds, and thrilling real-time combat.

Though the core game is chock-full of delightful content, this enhanced version further fleshes things out. It refines its already appealing battle system, along with adding online leaderboards, upscaled graphics, and additional content.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Developer: UbisoftPublisher: Ubisoft

A slightly more non-traditional RPG for you here, in the sense that its a South Park game so its about as crude as you could get, South Park: The Fractured But Whole is Trey Parker and Matt Stones attempt at lampooning the world of superhero franchises. Though TFBW would draw most of its attention from the storyline and writing, theres a brilliant RPG system lying underneath.

With a grid based battle system, fights in South Park: The Fractured But Whole contain more of a strategic element than other games on this list of the best Xbox One RPGs. Its not just which weapons or spells you use, but how you position your party thatll give you the win. Then again, if that doesnt work, just fart on everything and youll be fine.

Developer: Warhorse StudiosPublisher: Deep Silver

One for the hardcore here, as Kingdom Come: Deliverance is designed for those who enjoy the medieval world but hate it when they get attacked by dragons or other big monsters. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is more focused on giving the player a more authentic historical world to explore. Well, about as authentic as it could get before the game starts glitching out. At least its been patched since then.

Elder Scrolls : Skyrim

Xbox One: Best RPGs of the Generation

Developer: BethesdaPlatform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch

Be anyone you want. Do anything you want. Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is rammed full of delirious licence to properly live in its world: you can devote yourself to Alchemy and go hunting for a Daedra heart, adventure your way to the top of the Companions, or just wander around Skyrim making a living harvesting wheat and potatoes as a farmhand. Sure, the threat of a dragon razing a nearby village is almost ever-present. But despite the incoming apocalypse, your goals in Skyrim are just that – your own. Nothing forces you to accept quests. While we wait for Elder Scrolls 6 to be released, rest assured that Skyrim boots you out into the open with some looted gear and a whole world at your feet and then its up to you to find out what kind of dragonborn you want to be.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Developer: Bethesda Game StudiosPublisher: Bethesda Softworks

Hey, its that one that got ported to everything under the sun. Were still waiting for the inevitable announcement from Todd Howard that Skyrim will finally be playable on scientific calculators, disrupting Maths classes up and down the land. Still, theres a reason Bethesda keep pressing the re-release Skyrim button: its really bloody good.

With hundreds of hours of quests, DLC content, dungeons and discoveries to make, theres always something new to find when playing Skyrim, even if that something new is actually doing the main quest, because who cares about that when theres guilds to join and treasures to find? Still, if Skyrim was a bit too streamlined for you hardcore players, just remember that Oblivion and Morrowind are both backwards compatible.

Developer: Bethesda Game Studios, ObsidianPublisher: Bethesda Softworks

Pretty much a delete as appropriate entry here, as all three of these action RPG games have their own unique values and subtleties that make them worthwhile in their own way. If youve never picked up a Fallout game before, Fallout 4 is probably the best place to start as it does more to accommodate newer players.

Change my mind.

Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Developer: NintendoPlatform: Nintendo Switch

Link is a blank canvas. A wonderful, quiet blank canvas that you can turn into stealthy Sheikah, a fully-armored knight, or someone who runs around in their underwear throwing chickens at Moblins. Links personality is so malleable that you can do whatever you want in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it just feels right. Despite the apocalypse thats on the way, people have their own business to be getting on with and let you do exactly the same. From spotting the tip of a new tower in the distance to navigating one of the mysterious mazes on the edge of the map, your surroundings are so intriguing that the world practically begs you to get distracted, fitting perfectly into the idea that Link has woken up after decades in slumber and just cant stay still.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Developer: Larian StudiosPublisher: Larian Studios & Bandai Namco

The closest youll get to a Dungeons and Dragons campaign in video game form, Divinity: Original Sin 2 allows you so much freedom in the way you tackle its various quests. Depending on the character you play as and the choices you make, one playthrough could be wildly different from another, making it a highly replayable experience.

The epic adventure from Larian Studios can also be tackled with up to four players, making it infinitely better than a D& D campaign because you dont need to have everyone gathered in one place. Organisational troubles have been the death of many a tabletop playing group, but those issues are lessened when all you have to do is log on and play Divinity from the comfort of your own home.

Developer: Mistwalker & FeelplusPublisher: Microsoft Studios

Told you wed using backwards compatibility for this list, and why wouldnt we? Lost Odyssey was an Xbox 360 exclusive JRPG that still holds up to this day, especially if youre a fan of old school, turn-based combat. Created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, Lost Odyssey is an RPG experience that spanned 4 disks when it originally launched over 10 years ago. Now its the size of a normal modern game, so its hard to argue that it wasnt somewhat ahead of its time.
