Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Pc

Microsofts Xbox Game Pass Becomes Pc Game Pass

Microsoft Xbox Game Pass for PC Initial Review and Impressions

Microsoft has decided to remove Xbox branding from Xbox Game Pass, instead calling it the PC Game Pass service.

In one of the most bizarre rebranding decisions in recent memory, Microsoft says its increasingly popular Xbox Game Pass product will now be known as PC Game Pass. In one move, the company is diluting the Xbox brand and dissociating the product from the Microsoft brand.

Why do I think the PC Game Pass name is a problem? Lets take a look:

Firstly, the future of gaming is in streaming and online. Microsoft seems to not want the Xbox brand to be at the forefront of the push. Is the company moving Xbox to the side to be the console division and nothing else? Maybe, but on the flip side the Xbox Network and Xbox Game Streaming still carry the branding.

It is also worth noting Microsoft says the service is still Xbox.

Secondly, and more problematic is how generic the new PC Game Pass name is. Nothing about this new branding tells users that this is an Xbox and/or Microsoft product. It is unclear how Microsoft would want to create ambiguity around the service.

Really super important patch notes that will change everything youve ever known about Game Pass #PCGamePass

How To Install Xbox Game Pass Games In Another Drive

Dont have enough space in the C drive? You can install Xbox Game Pass for PC games in another drive or partition. Heres how.

Microsoft recently announced the much-awaited Xbox Game Pass for PC. The Game Pass for PC contains over 100 games. In case you dont know, along with the constant presence of all Microsoft Studio titles like Halo, Gears, Forza, Outer Worlds, etc.., the game catalog keeps refreshing with small to big AAA third-party titles. This makes it so that as long as you are subscribed, you will always have new games to play. For example, I never got to play the Middle Earth: Shadow of War back when it is released. Thanks to the Game Pass for PC, I quickly installed the game a week ago and as of writing this, Im almost done.

One of the best things about Game Pass for PC is that as of writing this, you can subscribe to it for $1 for the first month. Thats a good deal.

Now, as most of you know, games nowadays take a lot of space. It can be anywhere from a couple of gigs to nearly 100GB. For instance, the Shadow of War game I talked earlier takes up over 70GB. As you can guess, thats not the kind of space you can spare in the C drive. Thankfully, you can install Game Pass games in another drive or secondary drive. It is super easy to do. Let me show you how.

What Is Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass is a service that offers a huge number of Xbox and PC titles for players to download and play on their Xbox console or Windows PC at the cost of a single monthly fee .

While the PC subscription cost has essentially doubled since leaving beta, its all part of Microsofts way of nudging users towards the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which includes both platforms for $15 / £10.99 / AU$15.95 per month.

Whichever membership you go for, youre in for a wide array of titles from both first and third-parties from every generation of Xbox hardware. Thanks to backward compatibility, you can jump from the latest releases like DOOM Eternal to classics like Alan Wake and Ninja Gaiden 2, to the likes of Fuzion Frenzy, a game that launched alongside the original Xbox console.

While PC players dont get quite as many titles, they do get access to a wealth of indie darlings like Katana Zero, AAA-quality games like Gears 5, and everything in between.

While playing any of the games on each platform, youll earn Achievements and Gamerscore as you would usually, and a Quest system lets you turn in rewards based on trying new games or completing set tasks.

EA Play offers over 60 EA titles, too, and will be available as a free perk. Usually a $4.99 / £4.99 a month purchase on its own, EA Play is just another string to Game Pass bow.

The Problem Is The Xbox App

The problem with PC Game Pass is the Xbox app. Ive used PC Game Pass since it launched two years ago, and the Xbox app has always been the most consistent pain point. Its prone to bugs, horribly disorganized, and missing essential features that make platforms like Steam tick.

Disorganization is the silent killer. The filters thatsearch through Game Pass massive library dont work. I like to switch between my Xbox and my PC, so Ive grown attached to Xboxs Play Anywhere games . Only a fraction of the Play Anywhere games show up with the filter, even though a good chunk of the library supports Play Anywhere.

Microsoft uses tags to note the capabilities of each game, but they dont filter those games in the results. A lot of the tags dont make sense, either. For example, you can filter by 60fps+ capabilities, but youll only find five games. Why is this a filter on a PC? And more importantly, why does it only include five games?

These issues are just a small sample of the larger quality of life problems plaguing the Xbox app. You cant see your playtime or organize your installed games into groups. And you cant move your installation folder or see what the latest patches are for your games. The tagging system would help on the quality of life front, but not when half of the library is mismarked

The bugs and updates are what kill the Xbox app for me, though. Heres a small sampling of the bugs Ive encountered across versions:

Microsoft Rebrands Xbox Game Pass For Pc

While the branding of Xbox Game Pass has much to do with its relationship between compatible platforms, Microsoft went ahead and changed the name of Xbox Game Pass to PC Game Pass. However, the consoles still remain the core of Microsofts gaming business, which makes the Game Pass attached with the consoles. In fact, PC Game Pass offers a pretty distinctive library from its console sibling, including PC-only games.

Its also worth mentioning that the service as a whole hasnt changed, and the new PC Game Pass logo still includes the Xbox X badge, so Microsoft isnt going to ditch the Xbox branding anytime soon. In general, the rebranding is superficial as the service still retains the Xbox logo. The rebranded service does not change its library, subscription model, or cloud gaming integration, but simply simplifies branding for the sake of its PC fan base, as Microsoft explained in detail on Twitter.

Microsoft announced the news via video at the 2021 Game Awards , saying that it hopes to distinguish Game Pass from console brands and raise awareness that Xbox also has PC gaming services. Microsoft has confirmed the rebranding of its PC version of Xbox Game Pass subscription in several tweets.

Xbox Game Pass For Pc Finally Has A Sensible Name

There are three versions of Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription: Xbox Game Pass, which gets you console games, Xbox Game Pass for PC, which gets you PC games, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which gets you access to both the console and PC libraries, plus the benefits of Xbox Live Gold.

It’s a little confusing. The sequence of words “Xbox Game Pass for PC” only makes sense if you accept the premise that all games are Xbox games, and some Xbox games can be played on PC. It’s like calling PC Gamer “Xbox Gamer for PC.”

In the Game Awards skit embedded above, Microsoft announced that it’s finally giving its PC subscription service a more sensible name. It’ll now be called “PC Game Pass.”

I already feel lighter after having typed it out once. PC Game Pass. Ah, much better.

I was able to accept that there’s an Xbox app on the PC, and that we had to type out “Xbox Game Pass for PC,” but only because Microsoft finally started putting all its Xbox exclusives on PC, which earned it a lot of goodwill after its various disasters, such as Games for Windows Live. But I didn’t like it.

Between this announcement and an appearance from Remedy’s Sam Lake, it’s been a decent Game Awards for me.
