How To Play Sea Of Thieves Early With Xbox Game Pass
Sea of Thieves is almost here and those who preordered the game will be able to access it at midnight in their respective regions. However, what about Xbox Game Pass subscribers? If you’re willing to change some settings on your Xbox One, then those with an Xbox Game Pass membership can download and play the game early.
Xbox Game Pass costs $9.99 each month so be sure to check it out if you want a Netflix-style subscription for games. Sea of Thieves is already out in New Zealand so if you go to “Settings” on your console and change the “Location” to New Zealand in the “System” menu, you should see the option to “Install” Sea of Thieves if you go to the Microsoft Store on your Xbox One. We were able to test this out and play the game early. The download comes in at roughly 18 GB on Xbox One X so you might have to wait a while.
You will have to keep your region as New Zealand until the game launches in the country where you reside. If you change it back then you will get a prompt asking if you own the game. Changing regions might be against certain terms and conditions so be mindful of that.
The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and native 4K resolution on Xbox One X.

Add Each Other With Your Xbox Accounts
The first thing you need to do is to create an Xbox account if you don’t already have one. If you have a Microsoft account already, this should be easy. Use this to sign in to the Windows Xbox application.
If you don’t already have the application installed, you have to go to the Microsoft Store and search Xbox and Xbox Game Bar. This can be done with the Windows search engine on your taskbar. Open the application or use the shortcut keys to open the Xbox Game Bar .
Using the shortcut method to open the application, the Xbox Social tab will already be on the screen. All you have to do is insert the username of the person you want to add, like in the photo above, and follow them. Opening the application normally, you have to click Social at the top of the screen beside Game Pass. The console player can also add your username from their console. After this, you should be able to see each other as added friends.
The Xbox Game Bar is more efficient while actively playing a game since it’s a shortcut overlay, instead of tabbing out into a whole other window using the normal Xbox application.

How To Get Your Xbox Game Pass Save Files
The main conundrum with the Xbox app revolves around where it saves its games, as the app seems to place save files out of sight. Luckily, the app seems to default to the local folder found within the user files of your C drive.
Heres how to find Xbox app save files on PC:
- 1. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:/Users/your user name/AppData/Local/Packages.
- 2. Open the folder for the game save files youd like to access. The folder used by the Xbox app will likely have the games title, followed by some sort of ID string.
- 3. From your selected folder, select SystemAppData then wgs, which presumably stands for Windows Game Saves.
Once you reach the above destination, youll be greeted with a folder that contains two files one of which will be your save file. The second file within this folder is a container file, which helps the Xbox app identify the save file. The naming conventions that the Xbox app uses are somewhat complicated, using ID codes rather than conventional words or phrases for folders and files. While this might seem intimidating, checking the contents of the accompanying container file will provide some reassurance, as it will usually have the original title of the save file listed within.
Sea Of Thieves Is The Ultimate Proof That Subscription Services Like Xbox Game Pass Are A Winner
For an ever-improving service game like Sea of Thieves, Game Pass seems like where it’s always belonged.
When Sea of Thieves first released, I liked it well enough – but I also thought it was probably going to end up struggling. It had strong ideas, and a whole lot of developer Rares trademark heart, but it also just didnt seem like enough. It felt like it was destined to be another one of those service-like games thatd be good, but ultimately sink, unable to hold player interest.
That was what happened to me. After some riotous fun online, I fell off Sea of Thieves. Until, years later, I returned – and that return is further proof that this sort of game can thrive and be given a thrilling new lease of life by services like Xbox Game Pass.
To be fair, Rare itself has downplayed the role of Game Pass in Sea of Thieves enduring success. A few months after its 2018 launch, Sea of Thieves producer said that the number one factor in its success was it being taken up by streamers and content creators. And its true that with its emergent, non-scripted, anything-can-happen seafaring jaunts, Sea of Thieves is a perfect fodder for streaming. But for me, as the game approaches its third birthday, Game Pass feels critical to its continued relevance and success

Moving Your Copy Of Sea Of Thieves From Console To Pc
Because you can link your Xbox account to a computer, this means you can transfer some of your Xbox games to your PC as well. Games that are eligible for a second free copy on PC or Xbox need to say they support “Xbox Play Anywhere” on them and be a digital copy. You must also have the latest updates for Windows 10 and your Xbox.
Sea Of Thieves has Xbox Play Anywhere support.
Once you have all the latest updates and have purchased a digital game that supports Xbox Play Anywhere, the game should instantly be available in your library on the Windows Xbox application or on your console, once you log in. This works whether you purchase the game from your console or from the Windows 10 Microsoft Store.

How To Get Sea Of Thieves Free With Xbox Game Pass Trial
Xbox Game Pass offers players a means of playing Sea of Thieves for free for two weeks.
While Sea of Thieves is currently full of adventuring pirates, there are still players who are a bit unsure about joining in on Rares latest and greatest title. If the price tag is making you feel a bit sea sick, Xbox Game Pass might be your solution. Thanks to the Xbox Game Pass trial, players can experience Sea of Thieves for free for two weeks.
Sea Of Thieves Lost Half Its Players On Xbox One And Windows 10 Pc After Xbox Game Pass Free Trial Expiry
- Sea of Thieves was on Xbox Game Pass at launch
- Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft’s game subscription service
- The game had nearly two million players at launch
Microsoft’s open-world pirate adventure Sea of Thieves didn’t have the best critical reception on launch. However it managed to maintain a steady base of players on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. This was due to the fact that Sea of Thieves was on Xbox Game Pass, the company’s Netflix-like subscription service. Xbox One and Windows 10 PC gamers could avail of a two week trial to Xbox Game Pass and play Sea of Thieves, essentially giving them a taste of the high seas for free. And it seems that the Xbox Game Pass free trial was all they needed to decide if they should continue playing Sea of Thieves.
According to a report from analytics firm Superdata, Sea of Thieves lost half of its user base on expiry of the Xbox Game free trial. The game haemorrhaged close to one million users.
“Sea of Thieves has early success but with a caveat. Sea of Thieves had 1.7 million monthly active users on console and 283,000 on PC during its launch month. However more than half of these users obtained the game through the limited free trial offered as part of Microsofts Xbox Game Pass. This leaves some unanswered questions concerning the long-term success of the title,” the firm said.

Sea of Thieves is an open-world pirate adventure where you can find treasure on your own or with friends. There are plenty of other encounters like a megalodon to keep you busy. There’s a lot to do, and the title’s popularity continues to grow due to its excellent post-launch support. Since Sea of Thieves is part of Xbox Game Pass, it’s hard to know just how populated the title is. Luckily, Xbox Games Marketing Manager Aaron Greenberg discussed some relative statistics.
Recently, Gamereactor managed to interview Greenberg. During the conversation, he revealed that Sea of Thieves was a “top-performing” title. You can read part of the statement below.
While it’s unclear where Sea of Thieves exactly stands, it’s good to know that it’s one of the “top-performing” games on the service. If you take a look at the “Most played games” on the Microsoft Store, it’s frequently in the top 10 when it comes to Xbox Game Pass listings.
The next Sea of Thieves event starts on September 11 and it’s called Smuggler’s Fortune. It was previously referred to by another name, but this more accurately reflects what it’s about.

Xbox Boss: Sea Of Thieves Needed Xbox Game Pass To Thrive
Xbox head Phil Spencer talks about how the fans supporting Xbox Game Pass are a major reason for the success experienced by Rare’s Sea of Thieves.
Xbox Game Pass can be thanked for the continued success of Sea of Thieves. The game initially launched to mixed feedback from audiences. While the core gameplay itself was enjoyable, there just wasn’t much to do. The sandbox was left without many toys, it seemed. Fortunately, the studio developing Sea of Thieves, Rare, never gave up on the game and has fleshed it out considerably. In fact, some may say it is now one of the better games available from Xbox Game Studios this generation.
The team even added a new PvP mode to Sea of Thieves that better allows players to flex their competitive muscle and swashbuckle to their hearts’ content. Other additions include a full-fledged story mode that deepens the lore of the game and provides treasure hunters with a number of new quests. All of this has been added for free, and the game will continue to grow in the months and years ahead. Of course, this is only possible thank to the fan base that actively plays it, but apparently, this wouldn’t be the case if Sea of Thieves wasn’t on Xbox Game Pass.
