Expanding Xbox Series X Series S Storage: The Basics

Xbox Series S Unboxing: Our first look at the dinky next

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S pack the same SSD storage, bringing up to 40 times speed increases over older Xbox One consoles. Microsoft opted for a custom solution based on NVMe SSD technologies, delivering best-in-class read and write speeds, albeit costly compared to the slower hard drives from the Xbox One era.

The Xbox Series X ships with a 1TB internal SSD drive, while the Xbox Series S features a reduced 512GB capacity out of the box. In reality, Xbox Series X has just 802GB of space usable for games, with Xbox Series S offering just 364GB. With new releases from franchises like Call of Duty, Halo, and NBA 2K now surpassing 100GB, it’s easier than ever to outgrow the included storage.

When your games library eventually fills the internal drive, Microsoft provides two primary routes to increase your available storage on Xbox Series X and Series S. The two storage expansions are both solutions for playing and storing Xbox games, although which is best varies between users, and the games they choose.

In brief, the growing list of Xbox Series X and Series S Optimized games need high-speed storage, and only Microsoft’s custom SSDs can deliver. Beyond the internal SSD included with Xbox Series X and Series S, the official Xbox Storage Expansion Card is the only seamless upgrade.

The Series S Is More Portable

This writer owns a Series S and, when it arrived, he realized how small it actually is. The Series S dimensions are a miniscule 10.83 x 5.94 x 2.50 inches, and it weighs only 4.25 pounds. The Series X is 11.85 x 5.94 x 5.94 inches, and weighs 9.8 pounds.

With this in mind, you could quite easily pop your Series S in your bag and take it away with you. If you are going to be staying in a hotel, you can hook it up to the TV, connect to the hotel Wi-Fi, and game away to your heart’s content. Lugging a Series X around is a significantly less appealing option, you have to admit.

Microsofts Two New Consoles

This week, Microsoft released its two new Xbox consoles. Theres the $499 Xbox Series X, and a cheaper $299 Xbox Series S. You can read our reviews of both of them by following the links below.

Xbox Series S review

Its not unusual for console manufacturers to offer a couple of different hardware options at launch, but normally, the differences are minor. The PS3, for example, was initially available in two models. There was a version with a 60GB hard drive as well as a cheaper version with a smaller 20GB hard drive, no Wi-Fi support, and fewer ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft also originally sold a Core version of the Xbox 360 in 2005, which included compromises like including a wired rather than wireless controller and omitting a hard drive.

The differences between the Xbox Series S and Series X are more substantial and have a big impact on how games look. While Microsoft says the Series X is targeting running games at 60fps at a full 4K resolution, the Series S instead targets a lower 1440p resolution at 60fps. Its a big power disparity, similar to what we saw between the Xbox One and the Xbox One X, but this time, the two consoles were available on day one, rather than releasing years apart.

The Xbox Series X comes complete with a disc drive.Microsofts Series S is less powerful and digital-only.

Scalpers Arent Targeting The Series S

How To STREAM From Xbox Series X|S

Its fair to say that the Xbox Series S may not tempt some consumers, despite its affordability and widespread availability. Although $250 is a bargain for a next-gen console, skeptics may still be holding out for more expensive options such as the Series X and the PS5, which they believe would arguably serve them better in the long run.

Thankfully, scalpers and resellers dont seem to be very interested in the Xbox Series S due to the relatively low markup they can put on the console, and the fact its in plentiful supply. A quick Internet search shows that on websites like eBay, there are significantly fewer Series S models being sold than the Series X. To be exact, at the time of writing there were three times as many listings for the X than the S in the UK.

Not only is the S model being resold less frequently, but its also going for less than its original price. By contrast, the Xbox Series X can often be spotted on sale for approximately $750 , which is significantly higher than its MSRP of $499 / £449.

What Are The Hardware Specs On The Xbox Series X

Adding Roms And Bios Files

ROMs should go in the Downloads folder on the local disk space accessible by RetroArch. To do this, open the Xbox Device Portal in a browser on your computer, and click File Explorer. Navigate to LocalAppData > RetroArch > LocalState > Downloads, and then use the file picker at the bottom to add any ROMs youve legally acquired.

Warning: Be sure to follow all relevant laws when acquiring ROMs and BIOS files. A law professor provided us with a detailed analysis of the legalities surrounding emulating retro video games.

It should be possible to add ROMs to an external drive, but unfortunately, due to the temperamental nature of RetroArch in its UWP app form, we couldnt get this to work during testing.

Youll have to put any BIOS files you want to use in the LocalAppData > RetroArch > LocalState > System folder.

Connect Your Xbox Controller And Complete Setup

Once you’re all done, the Xbox app will bring you back to the Home tab. After a moment, you’ll see a prompt on your TV to connect your controller.

Put the AA batteries into the controller if you haven’t already, then press the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on. After it connects, hit the A button to begin.

If you need to pair your Xbox controller manually, press the Pair button on the front of your console, which is to the right of the front USB port. Then press the Pair button on top of your controller, to the right of the LB button.

You’ll likely next see a prompt to update your controller. Start the process, keeping your controller turned on and as still as possible while it runs.

Afterward, you’ll see a prompt to sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. This is an excellent value and one of the prime draws of owning an Xbox, but you can decide whether you want to try it anytime later on.

Moving on, depending on your TV, your Xbox may prompt you to set up “advanced video features,” such as 4K output. You can go to Settings > General > TV & display options later on to change these options.

Finally, you’re done! You’ll be greeted with the home screen of your Xbox Series S. Feel free to browse the Store, go to My games & apps to install games already linked to your Xbox account, check out Game Pass, and more.

The Xbox Series X and Series S launched on November 10, 2020, and have been in short supply ever since. The Xbox Series S has become somewhat easier to find, and the Series X is somewhat easier to find than it has been, but stock is unlikely to be consistently available throughout 2022.

Xbox Series S Vs One X: Graphics And Ssd Storage

On paper, the Xbox One X may look like a more powerful system, with more RAM and a beefier GPU. The Xbox One X was designed to be the most powerful console in the world when it launched. However, it was bottlenecked heavily by its Jaguar CPU, which is architecturally the same CPU that shipped back in 2013 with the Xbox One base unit.

The Xbox One X was all about delivering 4K games with GPU-bound enhancements. The Outer Worlds, Gears 5’s campaign, Wasteland 3, and various other games run at a crisp 4K resolution on Xbox One X, with enhancements and other improvements. 4K resolution gives you more pixels per inch, resulting in a more detailed, more impressive image quality. That, however, also requires an oft-expensive 4K television set. While the Xbox One X was a pioneering console in the 4K space, the games languished at a choppy 30 frames per second, which is a limitation commonly associated with the weaker CPU in the Xbox One X.

Speaking of those “other features,” while it has fewer teraflops on paper, the RDNA2 architecture provides better per-teraflop returns than the GCN architecture in the Xbox One consoles. Put simplistically, teraflops are generally thought of as a vague measurement of raw graphical processing, but the full story is more complicated.
