Apple Arcade is here! Mobile gaming is saved!
Alright, so it’s too early to declare that Apple Arcade is the best at anything. The platform does, however, let mobile gaming advance in ways that publishers would never have allowed a year ago. The monthly subscription means that revenue can come from somewhere besides in-app purchases, making room for gameplay that doesn’t rely on fostering addiction. It also includes Apple TV in the fun, moving mobile gaming away from touchscreens and closer to its console cousins. Good thing most gamers already have controllers for that.
Apple Arcade games are compatible with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers thanks to new updates to TvOS and iOS. Here’s what you’ll need to do to make that happen.
Best For Playstation Owners: Dualsense Controller
Getting a PS5 was one of the hardest things to do last fall, and its scarcity seems like it’ll continue well into 2021. The controller, on the other hand, is readily available and fantastic. It’s a huge step up from the PS4’s controller and looks and feels next-gen. The white and black design might turn off some of Sony’s faithful, but the controller is comfortable and looks great. I particularly like the thumbsticks, which feature a slight lip that gives the sticks some added grip.
Connecting the DualSense controller to your iPhone or Ipad is simple, too. Just turn on your iOS device’s Bluetooth and sync your controller. This allows you to play any controller compatible iOS game. If you’re enrolled in the 14.5 public beta test, you can edit your controller options, rebind buttons, and even disable haptic feedback.
If you’re one of the lucky gamers who found a PS5, then using the controller that came with the system is a no-brainer. Of course, like the Kishi, the problem with using the PS5 controller doesn’t really come from the device but the iPhone. You’ll want to invest in an iPhone mount to get the most of your controller combo.

How To Connect The Xbox Series X Controller To Your Android Phone
In theory, you can connect the Xbox Wireless Controller to any Bluetooth-compatible Android device. If your device is having difficulty detecting it, however, then consider updating to Android 11 or the nearest equivalent of which your phone is capable.
Otherwise, the steps are fairly similar to those above. Start by swiping your finger downward from the top of the screen to open the Notification Shade. Find the Bluetooth icon and turn it on if it isn’t already activated.
Next, tap and hold the Bluetooth button, which will take you directly to the Settings menu for connecting devices. You can also reach this page manually in Android 11 by navigating to Settings > Connected devices, or on Samsung’s One UI 3.0 via Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. Other OSs or OEMs may place these settings elsewhere.
Turn on the controller by holding down the center Xbox button. It will either turn on your Xbox Series X and stay lit up, or blink slowly if it isn’t paired to anything. Press and hold the Pair button the small ‘(((‘ button on the back of the controller next to the charging port for several seconds without letting go. The center light will begin to flash rapidly.
Look back at your Android phone. Your controller should have appeared under ‘Available devices’ as ‘Xbox Wireless Controller’ or something similar. Tap this option, then tap Pair to connect it to your phone. You’re ready to game!

Best For Accessibility: Xbox Adaptive Controller
While I may not like touch controls, I can’t deny that there’s an audience for them, especially for those with disabilities. Microsoft, seeing the need for a bridge between the two worlds, introduced the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
The Xbox Adaptive controller was created with limited mobility players in mind. The Xbox Adaptive Controller is a unified hub and works with various external devices, such as switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks to create a custom controller. You may customize it further by adding button, thumbstick, and trigger inputs via the addition of assistive devices that connect through the 3.5mm jack or the USB ports.
Like the Xbox Controller and the PlayStation Controller, gaming on an iPhone with the Adaptive Controller requires an additional mount. Still, it’s the ideal controller for any gamer who may need extra assistance while they play.
How To Switch Between Your Xbox Series X And Bluetooth Device
One of the coolest tricks with the Xbox Series X controller is that it remembers both your console and your synced iPhone or Android phone. Because of this, you won’t need to follow the above steps every time.
Once your Xbox Wireless Controller is connected to your phone, double-tap the Pair ((( button. Your controller’s central light should briefly flicker, then turn solid again as it reconnects to the Xbox Series X.
Ready to switch back to mobile gaming? When your controller is paired to your console, hold down the Pair ((( button until the center light starts flashing. This time, so long as your phone is nearby and has Bluetooth activated, the Xbox controller will remember and sync to it automatically.
If the controller doesn’t detect the old phone, it will stay in pairing mode, allowing you to connect a new phone to it if you wish.

Your iPhone connects to game controllers using Bluetooth. This means that any controller you connect needs to have Bluetooth, too.
Luckily, nearly all official Xbox controllers have Bluetooth. This includes the controllers that come with the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series X/S. So if you’ve bought your controller within the last five years, you probably don’t need to worry.
If you’re still using the controllers that came with the original Xbox One, however, you might need to upgrade.

Enter Pairing Mode On Your Xbox Controller
First, update to iOS 13 if you haven’t already. Then, before going any further, know that only Xbox Wireless Controllers that have Bluetooth built-in are compatible with iOS 13. If your controller is from the Xbox One S or was purchased after that console’s release, it’s more than likely equipped with Bluetooth. An easy way to tell is if the Xbox button is on the front of the controller. If it’s on the top in between the bumpers, it’s the old version without Bluetooth.
If you’ve got a Bluetooth version, you’ll need to pair it with your iPhone just like other Bluetooth devices. First, turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button. Next, press and hold the “wireless enrollment button,” as Microsoft calls it, on top next to the USB charge port for two or three seconds, then let go to begin pairing.
Best For Xbox Owners: Xbox Core Controller
The Xbox Wireless Controller has been the template for controllers since the Xbox 360, and for good reason. Everything from the button placement to the size and weight of the controller just felt right. Years later, with the release of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft seems to have taken an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach, making just minor refinements to their controller to improve on perfection.
Just holding the Xbox Core Controller in your hands feels good, and the button and controller placements are accessible and feel just right. The back of the controller features a textured grip at the ends that supports your hands, and the addition of a capture button right in the center makes grabbing video clips and screenshots a breeze. And like the DualSense controller, connecting an Xbox Controller to an iOS device is a simple process.
Microsoft knocked it out of the park when they designed this controller, and its feature set is worth the price of admission. The only downside is, again, having to invest in a mount to use it, as well as its odd choice to use double A batteries instead of a chargeable one, but aside from that, the Xbox Wireless Controller is an excellent way to play.
