Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Yakuza is a legendary franchise in its own right, but not necessarily for its RPG capabilities. That all changes with Like a Dragon, which takes the popular beat ’em up and turns it into a classic JRPG to great success.
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, you play as framed gangster Ichiban, who ends up in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Upon finally finishing his sentence, he finds everything, and everyone has changed. No longer is Ichiban a welcomed yakuza, but now firmly an outcast, with a rival gang in control of his hometown.
In Like a Dragon, you carve your way up from the ground floor, with wild turn-based combat with some of the craziest abilities we’ve seen in a game of this type. Like a Dragon impresses, long may it reign.
The 30 Best Rpgs On Xbox Game Pass
All of the best role playing games on Xbox Game Pass ranked
With every game incorporating RPG elements in some capacity, its getting really hard to tell the difference, but these best Role Playing Games on Xbox Game Pass show us that even when we blur the line of what makes an RPG, some games just feel more like an RPG than a game that has RPG elements tacked to it.
The Xbox Game Pass role-playing games on this list are some of the best examples of games that have a leveling system and a story to tell. Weve come a long way from the days when players rolled dice and checked character sheets to see if they passed some sort of skill check.
With that said, heres our list of the best RPGs on Xbox Game Pass that lets you walk a thousand miles in someones shoes.
The Bards Tale Iv: Directors Cut
The Bards Tale IV is a dungeon-crawler RPG of the oldest sort. Bypassing the silly The Bards Tale action-RPG , The Bards Tale IV traces its roots back to the earlier entries of the series and delivers a game that looks new but feels solidly retro.
Developer InXile Entertainment has been updating all kinds of classic franchises , so its no surprise they handled this sequel well. Whats more interesting is how much like the older games it can feel at times!

Dragon Quest Xi S: Echoes Of An Elusive Age
Speaking of traditional RPGs, theres almost no series out there that remains as faithful to the original formula as Dragon Quest. This classic JRPG series dates all the way back to the NES and has remained one of the most popular games in the genre, right up there with the likes of Final Fantasy. However, while nearly every Final Fantasy game reinvents, or at the very least retools, itself between installments, Dragon Quest has instead simply polished what worked into a near-perfect version of what it could be. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, despite being a nonsensical and unwieldy title, is almost comically simple to understand. You could guess the plot, and a good number of the twists, within the first couple of hours, and the turn-based combat is like putting on your favorite sweater cozy, warm, and familiar, but not going to turn any heads.

Fuga: Melodies Of Steel
A turn-based RPG with high stakes and multiple endings, Fuga: Melodies of Steel puts the player in charge of children operating gun turrets of a giant tank in order to destroy enemies. The children each have their own unique characteristics, meaning there is a high degree of tactics involved in the combat and the game’s mechanics are interesting to get to grips with.
Fuga: Melodies of Steel also has a fascinating story and is full of difficult choices which can affect the outcome. The giant tank the children operate becomes their home, but it is also an old superweapon with an apparent will of its own. Fuga: Melodies of Steel manages to hit a lot of the right notes for tactical RPG fans.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses
If strategy/RPGs are more your thing, you cant go wrong with Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Intelligent Systems put more social elements into this entry, and it paid off, especially in giving you a personal stake in the story by being a professor of your chosen house. Having the ability to shape and mentor your allies forges an even stronger connection to them. But its the unfolding political war that really holds the intrigue – expect betrayals and bloodshed as you must make difficult decisions of who to align with. The choices arent easy, but how the young leaders of the games three houses grow and shape the future is where things really take an interesting turn. Succeeding in the against-all-odds battles is a highlight, but you surely wont forget the relationships youve formed and the sometimes devastating turns they take. | Our Review
Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition
Supports: 2-player local and online multiplayer
Even though two mainline Gears of War games launched on Xbox One, we’re recommending Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. A beautiful remaster of the first entry in the series, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’s campaign holds up remarkably well all these years later. It features the best, most grounded story in the series, and each of the lengthy levels has intricately designed setpieces that help show off the finely tuned third-person shooter gameplay. It’s also just pretty cool to return to the game that popularized the “cover” shooter. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition supports two-player local and online co-op and is available to play for free for Game Pass subscribers.

Divinity: Original Sin 2
Larian Studios has established itself as such a talented and well-equipped RPG developer that it was given the chance to create Baldur’s Gate 3, but the company has nothing left to really prove–Divinity: Original Sin 2 is already its masterpiece, with an incredibly deep customization and role-playing system, support for four-player cooperative parties, and a massive open world to explore. The game has been available on Xbox One for several years, but it has only gotten bigger in the years since, with expansions and additional content to further flesh out what is already about 100 hours of classic role-playing goodness, filled with true player-choice. Seriously, you can kill basically anyone you come across without hitting a failure state, so the truly chaotic evil among us can have fun, too.
Overcooked: All You Can Eat
Supports: 4-player local and online multiplayer
Overcooked: All You Can Eat compiles two stellar cooking games in one awesome package. Although it’s accurate to call them cooking games, neither game offers a leisurely experience where you get to stop and admire your dishes. Played from a top-down perspective, Overcooked is a frantic cooking sim that demands quick wits and the ability to stay calm in the kitchen. Each level asks you and up to three friends to prepare dishes for hungry patrons. Sounds simple enough, right? Not quite. You only have a short amount of time to make your meals, and the kitchens themselves are dynamically designed to produce mayhem. Anyone can jump into Overcooked’s fast-paced cooking action thanks to a simplistic control scheme, but gathering ingredients and preparing dishes requires teamwork and solid communication skills. The All You Can Eat bundle is chock-full of hilarious fun whether you’re playing online or on the same couch with friends.

Q: Is There A Mass Effect Movie
When the film rights for Mass Effect were picked up back in 2010, fans of the franchise were elated. The idea of seeing such a massive gaming franchise transition to the big screen had fans eagerly anticipating further news. Unfortunately, plans for a movie were eventually scrapped a year later and fans were left heartbroken. However, recent talks of a Mass Effect TV show have reignited which has made fans jump for joy again. The television format certainly suits the games rich storytelling more than a movie would. The fact that they are willing to give fans a larger story is a great thing.

The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls franchise has such a massive following that fans are eagerly awaiting the next big chapter to go through. We know that Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls VI but were left waiting on any information to give us a bit more insight into what adventure may hold for us next. Fortunately, fans of the franchise that are looking for something new to go through will find The Elder Scrolls Online to be something scratch that itch this franchise has left with us since the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
This game takes place a millennium before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim so those of you who were hoping to revisit some of the more familiar locations or characters in past games might be a bit disappointed. With that said, this is still a high fantasy RPG with several different quests to partake in. In fact, since this game launched back in 2014, theres been plenty of new chapters and DLCs added into the mix. Youll find expansions that put players back into notable territories, along with past guilds such as the Dark Brotherhood. Developers are still releasing new content into the game so you shouldnt have any shortage of quests to partake in.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Like Dragon Age, this is the first game of the Deus Ex series that I’d ever played. And, like Dragon Age, I bounced off pretty hard on my first experience with the game. But once the story really gets going and you get some more options in terms of building the combat style you prefer, this game is awesome. The world-building this game accomplishes is something to behold, and if you like the cyberpunk aesthetic, you’re going to love the look and feel of this game. There are a ton of decisions to make in the story and a huge variety of ways you can get through every level, ensuring you get to play the game your way.

The Witcher : Assassins Of Kings
Often overshadowed by its highly acclaimed successor, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the best RPGs the Xbox 360 offers. It wouldn’t be farfetched say that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is the best game in the series. It starts slow but picks up pace as you acquire new skills and spells. This fantasy game’s protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, has a cunning personality and an uncanny way with the ladies.
Dying Light Stay Human
Dying Light was a massive hit, and it wasnt much of a surprise to see a sequel come out. Fortunately, even if you never played the original Dying Light video game, you can still jump into this installment. The game takes place several years after the events of the first game. Overall, the world is in chaos after a virus has spread across the lands, infecting humans and turning them into mindless zombies. In this game, youre taking the role of a young man named Aiden. As a child, Aiden and his sister were used in experiments. However, one day Aiden becomes separated, and years later, hes still on the hunt to find his sibling.
The game has players going to a large city haven that attempts to protect themselves from the undead zombie hordes. However, with nearly everyone infected, the fear of being kept in the dark has everyone on edge. Furthermore, with nightfall expediting the virus mutation, the city itself is in constant danger of a civilian turning into a ferocious zombie. Players are battling the various undead zombies, helping factions within the city limits, making critical choices, and seeking any clues that might point him in the direction of where his sister is all these years later.

Disco Elysium: Final Cut
The world is cruel, dark, and incredibly messed up, but it has the potential to be so much more. Thankfully, thats true of the character you play in Disco Elysium too, who can be anything from a useless waste of skin, to a true paragon of justice and morality.
Disco Elysium is a text-heavy RPG thatll have you laughing, cringing, and crying as the story unfolds. Its an exquisite game, and the Final Cut edition of the game only makes it better.
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a third-person action adventure game by Eidos Montreal that follows Lara Croft and her adventures. It is part of the game reboot series and it is to be released in September 2018 for various platforms.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider

If you like the original Tomb Raider game, may love this action adventure game too. Myself, I’m a big fan of the games and movies and can’t wait for this reboot to come out! I’m giving it a rating of 3 until I’m able to play the game and fairly assess how it stands among Xbox One RPG games.

Best Xbox Rpgs: Bottom Line
The very definition of what makes an RPG an RPG is evolving all the time, as developers blend genres to find new and unique games for us to peruse and enjoy. Games like The Witcher 3 and Final Fantasy XV take a more open-world approach, while games like Pillars of Eternity and Dragon Quest XI call back to a more classic turn-based style. This list is only the beginning, as we expand to cover many of the major RPGs in the upcoming Xbox games list in the coming months.
While it was panned by critics for broken promises from its marketing cycle and past-gen versions, I had an absolute blast with Cyberpunk 2077, which despite issues, was easily my favorite game of 2020. It doesn’t play particularly well on the base Xbox One and PS4, but if you have higher-end PC or an Xbox Series X, the issues are nowhere near as prevalent. Although, you may want to hold for the official Xbox Series X-enhanced version. In Cyberpunk 2077, you play as V, a merc for hire in a violent corporate hellscape. Your decisions have major ramifications on the outcome of the game, which gives you a large degree of freedom for tailoring how you tackle challenges and combat in this cybernetically enhanced wide-open world.

Tales Of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
The Tales games have been around for ages. Its first been released into the marketplace back in 1995 with Tales of Phantasia. Since then the series has continued with new installments. However, one of the past video game installments for this franchise was treated with a nice remastered edition that you can enjoy right now. Tales of Vesperia released originally back in 2008 but its enhanced edition of this game, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition released back in 2019. This time around players follows a world that is run mainly by a precious resource that offers the power and even water for the lands. When this resource is stolen, a group joins together in an attempt to track down the thief and restore peace into their lands again. This game also features a unique combat system that the series is known for. Dubbed the Linear Motion Battle System that has players going into a brawling style of gameplay rather than a traditional turn-based combat system.

Grand Theft Auto Online
Supports: 8-player online multiplayer
Grand Theft Auto Online is one of the most popular online multiplayer games around. Grand Theft Auto Online lets you create a character and complete objectives and get into random shenanigans across San Andreas. While you can make your own fun, there are dedicated missions and a story that takes place before the events of Grand Theft Auto 5 that’s designed to be played cooperatively with friends. Whether you want to complete elaborate and tricky heists with friends or simply see what kind of trouble you can stir up, Grand Theft Auto Online is an expansive cooperative experience that can be your hangout spot to unwind at night. It comes free with Grand Theft Auto 5, which is available on Xbox Game Pass. A standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online is in the works, too.
Pillars Of Eternity Ii: Deadfire
Platforms available: Xbox One, PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch
This is what you get if you take the DNA of Balder’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, but start making the game almost 20 years after those titles appeared. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a classic isometric party-based RPG, a style that went out of fashion just after the turn of the millennium, but one that’s good to have back.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is saturated with old-school role-playing flavor. It’s the story of a blighted land, and playing it is no cakewalk. You’ll need strategy, as hack ‘n’ slash tactics don’t work here. Combat is fluid rather than turn-based, but you can pause the action at any point to issue your party orders. If you played and loved Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale, you’ll feel right at home.
