Ultimate Survival Sim: The Long Dark
The Long Dark is the best survival game on Xbox today, set in the deep Canadian wilds. During a freak meteorological catastrophe, you have to brave the freezing cold, scavenge for supplies, and fend off wild animals driven mad by the strange events. The Long Dark also has an episodic story mode that is as engrossing as it is moving. Every budding survivalist should play this.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition
- Optimized for Xbox Series X/S
The Elder Scrolls games have always provided players with a huge fantasy world to explore, but none have been as varied or cohesive as Skyrims.
Sure, its been around the block a few times and its available on just about every format going. Chances are most gamers have already played it numerous times. But do we ever really get tired of exploring its rich and varied lands?
Abandoning the class system used by previous entries in the series, Skyrim enables players to develop a character as they see fit throughout the course of the game. This, along with a streamlined menu system, makes the game much more accessible to those new to the series. With a world full of mysteries and quests to solve, as well as dragons to defeat, Skyrim is still one of the best open world games for those seeking an absorbing and time consuming fantasy.
Assassins Creed Iv: Black Flag
While Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest entry in Ubisoft’s long-running franchise, it’s arguably not the best one. Instead, if you crave an historical action/stealth simulation, my recommendation is to hit the high seas with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. In this rollicking pirate adventure, you take control of Edward Kenway: a reluctant Assassin who also commands an independent warship called the Jackdaw. As you explore the lush Caribbean setting, you’ll cross paths with famous pirates such as Edward “Blackbeard” Thatch and Anne Bonny, and unravel a Templar conspiracy that threatens the New World. The stealth and platforming work fine, but the ship-to-ship combat is where the game excels.

Elder Scrolls : Skyrim
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch
Skyrims world doesnt revolve around you. Somewhere in the wilds theres a necromancer trying to animate a skeleton. At the same time during the day youll find a pack of bandits taking on a giant , or wander into a nearby village only to have a dragon attack it when youre stumbling out of the inn. Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is made for stories, and its so eager for you to sample its delights that even if you were to avoid every major settlement youd still run into 30% of its quests out in the wild. The map is just filled with stuff to do, bizarre things to see, creatures to impale with sharp implements, NPCs to pickpocket, creepy Dwemer ruins to explore…oh, and dragons to fight. Even after playing it for a casual 100 hours there are still quests that you wont have found, and hidden bosses waiting to be slayed. Its hard to overestimate the impact Skyrim has had on the lives of gamers everywhere, but to get a good idea of its effect and just what Elder Scrolls 6 has to live up to, youre best off jumping in and starting your new life in its world.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Everybody and their grandma knows about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It was late 2011, and the world had the pleasure to play one of the biggest Bethesda games on the planet. This is undoubtedly a last-gen game, but, truth be told, it still holds up.
Skyrim is what anyone would call a detailed game full of random encounters, upgrade options, and missions, making it a real RPG experience for a lot of people. What makes all of this better is the fact that it has one of the biggest open-worlds on Xbox One.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Developer: BethesdaPublisher: BethesdaSingle/multiplayer: Single Player
While we wait for Todd Howard to drunkenly stumble out to declare that Skyrim will be ported to the Xbox Series X and PS5, we may as well take some time celebrating the fact that its one of the best open world games ever made. The Elder Scrolls series has always been popular, but Skyrim could easily be considered a cultural touchstone.
In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you control the Dragonborn, a prophesied hero who will save the land from a terrifying resurgence of dragons. Thats the theory, anyway. In practice, youll get distracted joining the various guilds, or by leading people up the mountains before Fus Ro Dahing them off a ledge. It never gets old.

Depending on your opinions, the presence of zombies in your open world games is either a benefit or a detriment, so if youre in the former camp, Dying Light is just the game for you. With support for up to four players, you can roam around the city of Harran, slicing up zombies to your hearts content. Well, until the sun goes down anyway. Thats when things get a bit more dicey for you.

This is the quintessential Halo experience that has finally fulfilled all of its massive potential. If you’re a longtime fan of the Halo universe or a newcomer who has no idea where to start in the long saga of the Master Chief, you can’t do better than this.

No More Heroes 1 And 3
When you think of No More Heroes, the first descriptor that comes to mind is likely not open-world, and thats fair. NMH is more well-known as a chaotically hilarious third-person character-action game, as complex as that may sound, but it still “technically” has an open-world. In any case, the open-world sections of both NMH 1 and 3 are serviceable at best, which is why NMH2 took out the open-world and replaced it with a location map.
That said, the open-world sections of these games serve as a breather from the endless hallways of grunts youve been slaying with your beam katana, the off-the-wall events of the story, or just so you can process all the absurd lore stuff that was played off as a joke in the last cutscene. And, in serving that purpose, the open-world parts of NMH 1 and 3 are fantastic.
This is especially true for NMH 3 as the recently released third entry into the franchise pretty much improves upon everything that made the first game so memorable. So, if you like open-world games, but cant seem to find any that capture the same amazing combat as something like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, then the No More Heroes franchise is your best bet. Plus, there’s no MC out there that is as lovably insane as Travis Touchdown is.
The Best Xbox One Open World Games

When it comes to super-powered sandboxes on the Xbox One, theres two main choices : Crackdown or Prototype. While Crackdowns exploration focus and combat are worthy of merit, sometimes its just more fun to be a bit of a bad boy, and Prototype fills that hole brilliantly.
As the conduit for a dangerous mutagenic virus, you have the powers and abilities to turn New York City into your own personal playground, whether thats by imitating an old lady and roundhouse kicking people, or by calling in air strikes on military bases. Theres also that little ability to turn your arms into giant blades. Thats pretty cool too.

Admittedly, Riders Republic might be the game on this list thatll truly test your resolve, but not because its difficult. Sure, some of the races can be quite hard once you start playing on the higher difficulty settings, though its your ability to stomach cringey faux-zoomer dialogue thatll prove to be your biggest test.
Awful dialogue aside, Riders Republic is a genuinely enjoyable playground for sports about going downhill fast. Whether its bikes, skis, snowboards or wingsuits, Riders Republic has a little bit of something for everyone, and the massive open world is just begging to be explored. Being able to use a rocket-powered jetpack to do so is one of the most liberating ways to traverse an open world in recent memory.

Red Dead Redemption Ii
Wow, what can I say about the most talked-about game in recent memory? It really stands on its own as a narrative achievement and is a shining example of the narrative leaps and bounds I discussed regarding Rockstar.
This prequel to Red Dead Redemption puts you in the saddle of Arthur Morgan and his day to day life with the Van Der Linde gang headed by the insane, yet charismatic, Dutch. You know what I said about John Marston being liked by nearly everyone?
Arthur Morgan proved to eclipse John with that honor. Aside from being in a gang, Arthur is a pretty nice guy and seems so real as a person. Thats what this game does so well. You truly believe these people could be real people. The places too, are detailed and have such a rich narrative history.
You feel like this world has always existed and youre just merely passing through it. This hulk of a game was released in late 2018 to amazing critical acclaim for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas The Definitive Edition
To many of us, the original Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is Rockstars magnum opus in terms of an open world sandbox game. CJ is a very likable character, your actions and inactions affect CJs character model and can determine who would like to date him. The streets of Los Santos are a never-ending tug-of-war between multiple factions. While the countryside is full of crazies who, oddly enough, are more welcoming than your typical city dweller. I can go on and on singing the praises for this game. And it would all be ruined once we start talking about the Definitive Edition.
Words cant describe the utter disappointment I felt when the Definitive Edition hit the market. It was a freaking dumpster fire. Worse still, it spat on a beloved classic like it wanted the original to be dead and buried.
But why are you recommending this if was so bad? you may ask. Dear reader, it would take more than that to kill the spirit of GTA San Andreas. Rockstar came close to doing that but theyre slowly but surely putting it back together. Like Humpty Dumpty. And all the kings men.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit was personally one of my favorites in the franchise. The choice between playing as the cops or the racers brought a new layer into the game that just worked for me. Outsmarting the cops or making a hard turn to escape them was equally fun and developer Criterion Software managed to bring the magic into the remastered version almost a decade later.
NFS Hot Pursuit also keeps the system of the game generally simple for their players. There are no complex upgrades, mods to install, or car mumbo jumbo the causal racers wont understand. The balance between keeping it realistic, while arcade-like is beautifully done and mends the two genres very nicely.
Stalker: Shadow Of Chernobyl
Yikes, this game gives me the creeps, but in the best way. In 2012, the infamous Chernobyl zone experienced a second nuclear meltdown and is now inhabited by mutated animals, scientific anomalies, and roving bands of bandits and soldiers, all looking for the lost secrets of the zone. Upon its release in 2007, it was praised as being a great open world game.
You can complete the main quests or explore and gun down bandits. The quests themselves are great too, with some truly memorable and hair-raising adventures you wont soon forget. It can be extremely difficult for first-time players, but once you get more comfortable, you may feel very comfortable in the zone.
This is very similar to the Metro 2023 game series, except Metro is nearly all linear. You can find Stalker on PC.

The Witcher Iii: Wild Hunt
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt arguably raised the bar for the whole open-world genre. After the first two Witcher games, which were more traditional RPGs, The Witcher III opened up the wide world of Temeria, with four huge regions to explore and lots of optional objectives to pursue. What sets The Witcher III apart from lesser open-world games is that each quest feels unique and impactful, and many side quests can affect the main plot. You play as Geralt of Rivia, who finds himself in the middle of deadly monsters, powerful sorceresses and scheming royals as he tries to stop a catastrophic war.
Metal Gear Solid : Phantom Pain
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Going in with all guns blazing isnt everyones cup of tea, so if youre thirsting for a stealth action open world game Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain should be your hot beverage of choice. Encouraging non-lethal playing styles rather than killing indiscriminately, the degree to which all the different systems interweave is astonishing and youre free to roam and dispatch with enemy soldiers however you see fit. However, dont get too used to a set group of tactics – the enemies will adapt if you repeat the same approaches too much. Keeping you company in the world is D-horse and D-Dog, a wolf raised to help you in the field, and the dynamic weather system is just as helpful, as it periodically makes you harder to see and hear.
